'Establish state brothels': Christian Democrat

Published: 10 Sep 10 13:04 CET | Print version

A local Christian Democratic politician has called for Sweden to open government-controlled brothels, drawing a sharp rebuke from her party colleagues.

Sofie Jakobsson of Borgholm on the west coast of the island of Öland announced on Thursday that she supported the introduction of municipal or state-controlled brothels in Sweden, naming it one of the top three political issues that are most important to her on her website.

Jakobsson is the second delegate on the Christian Democrats' ballot for the municipal council election in Borgholm. Jakobsson backs the proposal as a measure to combat human trafficking, but party colleagues reacted strongly against the proposal, saying it is contrary to the party line.

"The Christian Democrats are the party that most clearly out of all parties has stressed the importance of the law [against] buying sex and that it should be forbidden to buy sex in Sweden and other countries," said Maria Fälth, chairwoman of the Christian Democratic Women's Association.

"That Sofie Jakobsson says she wants to legalise brothel activity is something that conflicts with the party line as well as the Christian Democrats' core values and vision of humanity. Her statement is highly inappropriate," she added.

Jakobsson, who is a horse trader and restauranteur, emphasised that it is her personal opinion. She is also in favour of lowering the legal age for purchases from state retail alcohol monopoly Systembolaget to 18 from 20 and calls Margaret Thatcher her political role model.

"What she said in the survey is in no way sanctioned by us," Mikael Almqvist, the top Christian Democrat delegate on the ballot, told local newspaper Ölandsbladet on Thursday. "This is the private person Sofie Jakobsson who spoke on behalf of herself and not the party.

Arne Sjögren, the third delegate on the Christian Democrat ballot, also rejected her statement.

"This did not seem well thought out at all," he told Ölandsbladet on Thursday. "I think she regrets it."

Attempts by The Local to reach Jakobsson were unsuccessful.

Good idea, legalise it, control it, tax it.
15:51 September 10, 2010 by tadchem
The formula is simple: If it is illegal, you can neither control it nor tax it. If you can't control it, you can't control anything that depends on it. Without illegal sex trade there would be a much smaller market for trafficking in humans. That makes the C-Ds the 'enablers' for a significant sector of crime.

I agree with Bryan, but I suspect that it would be simpler to do as the American government does...pass a law then ignore the enforcement of that law. In that way it keeps the government from having to do anything positive, while the criminals can do as they please.

hookerbolaget, hillarious!

I wonder if one could import a favorite brand like at Systembolaget?
17:28 September 10, 2010 by malette
trying to prevent sex trafficking by outlawing selling sex is like preventing forest fires by outlawing lightning. It also ignores human nature. And when does spending money on a date become prostitution? Not to mention it prevents a large portion of the population the legal ability to sell a commodity which THEY own for their own advantage.

This does nothing to prevent sex trafficking while stigmatizing normal human activity: it is the world's oldest profession for a reason.

In the end, it will be about as successful as that awful attempt at a "War On Drugs" by the USA. Mostly, the small and weak will suffer while the rich and powerful continue on their merry way.

Sofie Jakobsson should perhaps consider moving from the Christian Democrats to the "Liberal" People's party LOL ;)

@Argentina84

Or maybe Centerpartiet - they seem to be the party that has most gone down the neoliberal road in recent years (especially their youth branch CUF who have also called for the legalisation of prostitution).

Personally I think the sexköpslagen (law against buying sex), while not perfect, is the best way to go. As soon as prostitution is legalised it gives a huge boost to the sex industry in all its forms, both legal and illegal, and sends out a message that women exist solely as dehumanised objects to serve men in our society.

This would probably have the knock on effect of making Sweden a destination for sex tourism, is that what people would want for Sweden?

Also - I'm sure it would only make the trafficking of women slightly more legal, in that the people taking women from where ever and forcing them to work in prostitution would now just take them as normal and make them apply for visa etc.

No real change, other than the women would have some rights at least when they get here, but criminals are good at finding ways at exploiting systems and people.

No doubt people become prostitutes for many reasons. encompassing those who want a racy unfetted life style, to those who do it in desperation. If an adult enters this world entirely of their own free will, I might think their decision unfortunate but I could respect their choice. even though it is a life style that increases the risks of physical and mental health and makes a person more likely to experience violence, even violent death.

The sex trade where ever it is, will import persons and use brutality, imprisonment etc to keep the illegal immigrants compliant. It is a modern day slave trade.I don't think any government should do anything to legalize and increase the market for this trade. Prostitution is often referred to as ....The oldest profession... very likely that is true. That should not dignify this profession which at it's core is a selling of a person's dignity, essence. Treating fellow human beings as disposable garbage with zero respect for their humanity. No government should in anyway endorse this trade.

Why do people always assume that only women work in the sex industry? Why make this a feminist issue? Men are also sex workers.

Also bbryan is from here but cannot spell American?
