Outrage after rabbit slaughter broadcast

National broadcaster Sveriges Television (SVT) has sustained a wave of outraged reactions from viewers after a news programme showed excerpts from the slaughter of rabbits.

The film of the rabbit slaughter was shown on SVT's Rapport news programme at around 7.30pm. In poor taste, according to many viewers.

"When I watched Rapport yesterday I could not believe what I was seeing, you showed at around 7.30pm how to kill a rabbit with what looked something like a hammer," wrote one outraged viewer.

The news programme ran a story about how rabbit is becoming an increasingly popular dish in Sweden, with 300,000 of the animals slaughtered each year to meet demand.

Many of these are killed illegally, according to the report.

SVT interviewed one of Sweden's five slaughter firms, run by Gösta Johnsson, who argues that approved methods, such as bolt gun, for slaughtering the rabbits are not particularly efficient.

"The brain is about as small as a hazelnut. And you have to hit it in the centre. If the rabbit jerks its head then you miss," he said.

Johnsson instead deploys an alternative method of clubbing the rabbit to death and despite having been fined for the illegal method on several occasions, he continues to defend the practice.

"Hitting an animal in the head is considered very negative in Sweden. But it is by far the safest and best method, which has been used for over a hundred years."

The film of a rabbit being slaughtered using the clubbing method has now been reported to the Broadcasting Commission by a further disgusted viewer.

Rapport editor-in-chief, Morgan Olofsson, has meanwhile defended the decision to broadcast.

"Rapport's mission is to describe reality, had we reported on this without showing the pictures then we wouldn't have done it," he explained, adding that Rapport is no children's programme and that viewers were warned prior to the start of the programme.

Every year in Sweden we kill tens of millions of chickens a huge number of sheep and cattle. Killing is not pleasant but if we choose to eat meat then animals have to be killed. If animals are killed on our behalf then we should be aware of how they are killed.

We don't have to eat meat.
08:55 October 28, 2010 by ISayWhatPeopleThink
They guy is obviously the one having to kill rabbits and running this business, and frankly if he's using another method I wouldn't doubt it would be more effective than the methods "approved" by people in a room somewhere that's never had to kill a rabbit. I'd think it highly likely these guidelines are being set by people that lump them together and assumes slaughter methods for pigs, cows, sheep and other meat animals are all the same.

He's trying to find the most efficient method for slaughter, and if he can kill a rabbit quicker and more efficiently with a hammer than a bolt gun, why not? I'm pretty certain his best interest is to kill the animals as quick as he can...a suffering rabbit from a missed bolt that's bleeding and flopping around in pain isn't going to make his business run any smoother.

But that isn't what this is about, this is about it being shown on TV to the public and the viewers being offended. But hey, it was on SVT on one of the publicly funded crap channels that we all must shell out heaps of money in TV tax mandatorily to fund but hardly anyone cares to watch. Just send out a written apology to all three viewers of the show and call it a done deal. *shrug*

Haha poor vegetariens. Oh well, we are only human :P Think its good that everyone knows the process of how the meats gets to the plate.
10:29 October 28, 2010 by zooeden
It has nothing to do with vegetarians or vegans; And of course people know the process of meat or fish preparation... IT was In poor taste only, according to people to show it at the same time as meals are served, children on boliboompa time, gathering time polluted in space by idiotic media. Which means also is that it could be shown whenever part of the day!!!

Oh, jumpy is getting killed. This is bad...

I´d use an axe myself.

Faster, smoother, pain-free and very kind to the kind protein-giving herbivore.

basically we should educate children that whatever they eat containing chicken, beef, mutton, fish.... we must have to kill them...with machine or hand... science proves not only animal but plants too feel pain when we cut them.. so we also kill plants to eat them... if you believe in God, then you should know they are made for this purpose. Their population increase so rapidly, if we dont eat them they can spread damage..

for example in Australia, government have to spent million of dollar just to kill camels and other animals just to decrease their population.. in Sweden, goverment have to kill animal too like wolf etc...

#8 asee:

Today we even have rules and regulations on killing pigeons, for god´s sake.

I mean, sure enough, you don´t kill animals for fun but if they, for example get inside a supermarket, I happen to know some animal-right defenders don´t like it if these stray ones are just killed off. They pose a risk for an infection as they don´t care where they crap and walk around.

It´s amazing. You need a permit to kill a goddamn pigeon.

The butcher kills for the client. SVT reports for the viewer.

But all he wants is a tasty meal out of a dead body.

And no stories about how it came onto the dinner table.

Outer disturbace is inner disturbance.

I EAT MEAT!

|EAT IT RAW!

Will all you vegetarian bashing so called meat eaters give it a break

Most veggies can eat their food raw !

I am a Chef and see the total contradictions of meat eaters ,she does not like blood ,can you nuke this Chef there was blood , medium well ,well done , cremated and that is what modern day meat eaters are like !

Lambs liver raw ,try it or maybe you are enjoying nuggets made from the parts of an animal that Chef,s would not even touch !!

Most meat eaters are total wimps when it comes to eating the animal as a whole , they only want prime cuts ,forget the rest of the animal ,they are scared as xxxxt !

If an animal is slaughtered it should be as humane as possible and if eaten should be consumed and respect paid ,

But please do not knock vegetarians ,their choice and total respect .

This form of slaughter is wrong and the meat produced crap !!

Out here in the boonies, when we slaughter a pig, we use every part but the squeal.
01:46 October 29, 2010 by Da Goat
The squeal does tend to escape every time!

why don't they just break the rabits neck?

or maybe it should be done halal .... cut it's throat!

Funny people so many were outraged for a rabbit, but for human beings shot in Malmo no outrage not even one Swed made a deal about it... Very sad...there are some people who feel pity for a tree more than a human being...unless they themselves fall into trouble and feel they need sympathy

If Swedes want to eat rabbit, then they should know how the bunnies are being killed and brought to the neighborhood ICAs.

Meat eaters today are gutless, scared people. Don't eat meat if you can't stand how your dinner came to be.
17:16 October 29, 2010 by Tanskalainen
One of those triangular Russian axes would do the job in one second and it would be much more humane.
22:12 October 29, 2010 by redfish
What he says is true; if you properly use blunt force against the skull, you crush it and kill the animal as quick as possible.
19:15 October 31, 2010 by Strongbow
The method to use in a survival situation if you happen to catch a rabbit/hare is to hold it up by the hind legs, stroke it a few times to make it hold still, and then karate-chop the neck.
