Gothenburg police: terror arrest a 'mistake'

Gothenburg police have accepted responsibility for wrongly suspecting and arresting a man in connection with a terrorist bomb scare in the city over the weekend.

A 39-year-old man has described how he was violently apprehended by heavily armed police in front of his wife and four children. Police have said that they have not yet begun an investigation into what exactly went wrong.

They also emphasised that they, and not public prosecutors, made a mistake, said Erik Nord, head of the county police system.

"The mistake that we have seen, it falls on us. It is not with the Security Police [Säkerhetspolisen, Säpo] or the prosecution," Nord told the TT news agency.

"When I talked with representatives of the police authorities that had received information from the prosecutor, it was crystal clear that the prosecution was in the clear," he added.

The account of what happened when the police undertook its collective action early on Saturday morning has been characterised by confusion. Both Säpo and the responsible chief prosecutor Tomas Lindstrand have stated that five people were arrested and taken in for questioning.

However, Gothenburg police initially reported that they had taken four people into custody, but now confirm that it was five.

The explanation for the contradictory information circulating in recent days was that only the prosecutor had a complete picture of how many people would be be arrested and taken in for questioning, according to Nord.

He also admitted that it was wrong to serve a writ on the 39-year-old suspect. However, Nord was unwilling to say present whether it was also wrong of the man to be forcibly apprehended in front of his wife and children.

The incident will now be examined in a preliminary investigation of misconduct launched on Wednesday by prosecutor Björn Ericson at the Swedish National Police Crimes Unit (Riksenheten för polismål).

Nord believes that the investigation may take a couple of months. The man who was violently taken into custody will have to wait until the investigation is complete to learn the possible excuses behind his arrest.

"An apology shot straight into the air like a firework falls flat as soon as it goes off. An apology must be backed up with us explaining how this has happened and it will take some time before we can do it," said Nord.

Swedish police are famous for not doing anything, that they actually took some sort of action this time is surprising in itself, even if it now seems to have been the wrong action...

No one is ever going to hit Swedes and Sweden as long as you are careful about the people you are letting in your country and as long as you are not interfering in matters of other country like USSR, US and UK were/are used to.

Sweden had no business going to Afghanistan, hunting OBL. No one attacked you. You blindly followed Uncle Sam and his English brother. Now you are reaping rewards in shape of dead bodies, terror threats and alerts.

Be who you are, be independent, assertive. Make your decisions.

Allowing immigrants is not bad but you have to be selective, rather then letting every Tom, Dick and Harry in. It's irrespective of cast, creed and religion. No one is bad because of the religion he or she follows or because of the nationality rather, its ones nature which makes him good or bad, be it a Christian or a Muslim or a Jew.

Cheers.

Dear Editors at "The Local,"

Greetings!

Please correct me if I am wrong but nowhere in "The Local" news "copy" do I find reports of the filth kicking the 17 year old boy in the head when he tried to comfort his mother after the terrorists from the crime syndicate known as the "kingdom" of Sweden violated the privacy of the victims' home. That same youth was ordered at gunpoint to shut up, a clear violation of his God-given inalienable right to freedom of speech.

Neither do you report on the incident where the three year old girl had a loaded weapon aimed at her head by one of the very obliviously violence-prone control-freak police mentioned in the paragraph above.

Forget that the whole thing was a "mistake." The very actions of the evil police, no matter what the cause, are inexcusable.

Keep keeping safe and well, i.e. live and work in an impenetrable fortress.

Considering all of the traffic accidents caused by the reckless driving on the part of the filth, my further advice to you is to sell your cars and buy tanks!

Oh, one more thing: Don't ever appear to be a Muslim. Not in the crime syndicate known as the "kingdom" of Sweden anyway.

Thank you.

Good that they admitted it but the mission is already accomplished. The seeds of horrors are already planted among people. There won't be any News Alert that the terror alert was a mistake!!

Its great that they have appologised for their mistake. Still surprising they took any action. Over here in Jönköping, the most "action" I have seen from the police is taking drunks off down town in weekends. I called them once to report a breaking and entering at 3 AM, they arrived 5.30 and claimed they were "very busy" with all the cases. Case solving at 4 AM ?
