Borg positive to Danish border controls

Sweden's finance minister, Anders Borg, sees no immediate problems with Denmark's decision to increase border controls between the two countries.

“It is good that Denmark wants to take precautions to ensure we have no drug smuggling, cross-border criminal activity, human trafficking or similar carried out between Demark and Sweden,” said Borg to news agency TT.

On Friday the EU-commission expressed ‘serious doubts’ regarding the new Danish border controls and how they will correspond to EU law, according to Danish news agency Ritzau.

Despite Danish prime minister Lars Lökke Rasmussen speaking to European Commission chairman José Manuel Barroso on the phone on Friday, the former did not manage to pour oil on the troubled waters.

According to spokeswoman for the commission, Danish Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen, the commission has received the first evaluation into the legal implicationsof the proposed scheme.

“It raises serious doubts as to whether it corresponds with European and International law if the scheme is implemented in the intense and extensive way described, “ she said to news agency TT.

But Borg pointed out that it is still not known exactly what it is that the Danes are proposing to do.

“The EU-commission will look into this and ascertain that it doesn’t go against laws on free movement across borders or the positive integration we have in the Öresund-region, “ Borg said to TT.

He thinks that the free movement between Denmark and Sweden is crucial to the region.

“It should be easy to travel over the Öresund-bridge. It should be easy to live and work in Denmark and Sweden,” Borg said on Friday.

The Swedish border controls in the area are working well and are not too much of a hindrance to commuters, according to Borg.

“And of course drug smuggling, human trafficking and cross-border criminal activity are important issues. We believe that the Swedish customs play an important role in combatting these, “ he said to TT.

If Borg thinks it should be easy to live in Sweden and work in Denmark, why does he make it impossible to hold down a full time job in one country and a part time job in another country at the same time?

I wonder if there is some correlation between the levels of racism in a country and the desire to tighten border controls...The Danes...racist...never :-)

Border controls are bad news for refugee business and sweden is a leading country in the refugee business. Any threat to that will damage the economy and we refugees will take our business else where.

Well, it seems like the direction of smuggling and traffiking is from Denmark to Sweden and thanks to this new law! Let the drug dealers stay in Denmark!

Mehh as long as it slows down the drug traffic coming trough Denmark and on to us.

The way things are today it behooves all EU countries to tighten their border controls.

Awesome, Now if all the EU contries follow suit, Europe as whole will become a much safer place to live without unwanted immigrant terrorists walking straight through to Sweden and using it as a safe haven. Once this 'border control' is in full effect, then we can weedout the existing cell groups already here : )

"It is good that Denmark wants to take precautions to ensure we have no drug smuggling, cross-border criminal activity, human trafficking or similar carried out between Demark and Sweden," said Borg to news agency TT.

Good for him. He shows that he is not only damn good in finances, but in common sense as well.

Let's face it folks, open borders work only for Europeans. The rest have nothing to lose by breaking the law. They came from nothing, have nothing and don't give a damn about Danes, Swedes, Germans or anyone else native to Europe. Europeans who want open borders are those who have no sense of Nartionality and pretend to be better than the rest. Hah! This IS about class warefare, after all. And a sense of Nationality is intrinsic to belonging. Call it racism, but then, so what.

maxbrando: i live in the border with USA and all the time migrants coming from south America (mostly) they pass over te city where i live, or if they are released sometimes in Reynosa after being in jail in USA; with all our problems here, is hard for this people to live in here... but that´s their problem, i agree with every country make hard their borders, including Mexico.

@abraham lezama

First, thank you for signing with your name. It is quite unusual in Sweden. The majority has a nickname.

Second, inmigrants coming into Mexico, come from Central America and not from South America. They come mainly from Guatemala ahd Mexico has not been able to stop them.

Third, I agree with you that all the countries should have tougher boarder controls, but what would happen to our "paisanos" trying to enter the USA to make some dollars so they can feed their families? They are needed by the USA to do harvest work.

You must know Lezama, that the problem in Europe is not the problem you are facing in the town you live. The problem is that with the Shengen Treaty (free travelling for people and goods in the European Union), some countries have faced an invasion of drug dealers, human traffickers, smugglers and gangsters from countries that once belonged to the Soviet Union.

Mexico does not have that problem. People trying to enter the USA are neither gangsters nor human traffickers. They are hungry people in the need to make some decent salaries and in the need to feed their families left in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. Here in Sweden, we would welcome hard working "paisanos" but not he kind of people that has invaded the country. Borg is right with his "It is good that Denmark wants to take precautions to ensure we have no drug smuggling, cross-border criminal activity, human trafficking or similar carried out between Demark and Sweden," statement, whether some like it or not.
