Eva, 96, emigrates to Thailand

Having lost her husband and most of her friends, 96-year-old Eva Bergdahl from Karlskrona in southern Sweden has decided to pack up and move to Thailand to join her 68-year-old son.

Eva Bergdahl came to her decision three months ago, gave notice to her landlord and started to plan her new life on the other side of the world.

“I live here alone in a large apartment,” Bergdahl told The Local. “It’s starting to feel so lonely. So I thought I’d go down there and see.”

In Thailand she will meet up with her 68-year-old son, Ingolf, who lives there with his wife in the city of Cha Am. She has been promised she can stay in one of the rooms in his spacious house.

“But I don’t want to be a bother to him,” she explained. “It will only be until I find my own apartment to rent,” she explained.

Bergdahl is packed and all set to leave with one of her grandchildren from Karlskrona on Wednesday. He will accompany her on the long trip to the far east, but once there Eva Bergdahl will strike out on her own.

In the meantime there is much to be done at home in Karlskrona with the apartment due for a clean before handing back the keys.

“Floors and windows need swabbing,” she said. “But that I can do alone.”

The apartment is bare, with all of her furniture and belongings already given away to be sold at flea markets.

“I don’t have a chair to sit on. I don’t have anything,” she explained. “But I bought one of those air mattresses to sleep on, but the air ran out of it so I slept on the floor. No no, this is crazy. What have I started.”

In spite of the mishap, Eva Bergdahl doesn’t utter a word of complaint. She is instead thankful that her good health allows her to start over. Even the doctor was impressed, she said.

Travelling is nothing new to the adventurous nonagenarian, as she has seen much of Europe by train.

"But I've never gone as far as Thailand," she said.

She is aware this isn’t something that would normally be expected of the average 96-year-old, but she is unperturbed by the long flight.

“If I die on the plane then so be it,” she said with conviction. “But as long as I have my health it will be just fine. I just don’t want to walk around here and stare at the walls. Maybe I can shake things up a bit in my last days.”

Now here is someone to emulate. At 96, to uproot yourself, sell all you own clean out your apatment (YOURSELF!!) and take a plane to Thailand to start over. I am in awe and admiration of this woman.

THIS is a woman who should have HER picture at the side here in the "GALLERY" rather than some drunk treenage bimbo who's claim to fame is making out with some other girl, or having her pumped up plastic barbie boobs mauled over by some drunk.

Anyone can get groped....THIS woman is brave, has courage and guts and is someone Swedes should actually feel proud of. At 96 she is amazing.

And is this Eva someone famous or is the fact that she is moving something that is being done for the first time in the history of Sweden??

If u dont have news, dont fill the pages with rubbish................

@ nyag

Any one of 96 years of age who can take this kind of life changing adventure upon themselves Is famous and extra ordinary in their own right. ThisIS News and not rubbish. Quite possibly, (if you have read the article) it may possibly be the first time a 96 year old has done this on their own. Maybe the rubbish on this page is your post. I believe you have spelled your nickname wrong as well. The correct spelling is N-A-G.

@jacquelinee...

According to the news, "Travelling is nothing new to the adventurous nonagenarian" and she is not travelling somewhere totally by herself to start from scratch.. She is going to live with her son. And she is travelling with her grandchild...

I honestly don't see the wow factor here. God bless her that she is in god health but in Sweden a lot of elderly people have a brisk and healthy life so that no surprise there that she is fit to travel.

You find her spectacular, its ur freedom of choice. I dont find this news worthy.. Most of Local's news are dull, boring and lack professionalism...

I am happy to be the N-A-G for not finding this special as I have noticed that Swedes are very very independent and they tend to carry out most of their agendas on their own....

Certainly this is news...an important piece of news for Sweden. Most swedes in her age live in elderly homes. It is good to know that there is someone that still makes their own decision being so old like Eva.

Good on her. She might even find love. She could get a "Thai-boy" (Toyboy)

Dam I gotta get a life.....

I agree with jacqelinee and would like to see a picture of this lady. Trully inspiring story!

Lets praise life, people. Not NAG at it!

Love it! Go Eva! This has made my day better. :)

I think its great, and I want to do the same and would if I have the courage to take the risk.

The thing I don't understand though, is that I often read about Swedes moving all over the place yet I don't understand how they can. Do immigration laws not apply to Swedes as it seems they can move to the USA no problem, Thailand no problem etc.

How does it work, will this dear old lady have to do visa runs?

@ #18

I too am really interested in an update on how this brave lady is doing.

Still waiting for a picture of her in the "gallery" at the side here.

But, sadly, I guess that will not happen. Just more "Finest, revelling" teenage girls yet again *yawn* If I did not live in Sweden,I would honestly believe to look at this, that the only people who ever go out anywhere in Sweden were teenage girls and the only place they ever go is to bars to drink.

MORE EVA--- inquiring minds want to know.
