Triple murderer in new Finnish jail break

A Finnish man, previously convicted of murdering three people in northern Sweden in 1988, escaped from a prison in Finland on Wednesday morning where he was serving time for drunk driving.

46-year-old Nikita Fouganthine, who has changed his name several times, was known as Juha Valjakkala when he shot and killed a man and his 15-year-old son and then stabbed the man's wife to death in a graveyard in Åmsele, near Skellefteå, in 1988.

He was sentenced to life in prison and deported to Finland to serve his sentence.

In 2009, Fouganthine was granted a conditional release, but was re-arrested in Finland in June of this year and sentenced to four and a half months in prison for drunken driving and making illegal threats with an air gun.

On Wednesday morning, Fouganthine failed to show up for his prison work duty at the minimum security Kerava prison in Finland, the Finnish Daily Ilta Sanomat reported.

According to reports in the Finnish media, the escape comes shortly before he was set to be released.

“It was madness for him to escape. It simply shows he has the brain the size of a raisin. He would have been released any time now,” Staffan Brunn, a reporter for the Hufvudstadsbaldet newspaper, told Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet.

“Now he's a wanted man and in Finland it's a crime to escape from prison. Now he can expect a new sentence.”

Brunn theorized that Fouganthine fled prison because of “a pressing need” to see his girlfriend.

Wednesday's flight is only the latest in a string of escape attempts made by the triple murderer over the years, with the first one coming in 1991.

In 1994, he took a guard hostage and then escaped from the Riihimäki prison, only to be arrested a few hours later.

In 1997, Fouganthine and a fellow inmate managed to make it out on the roof of the Kakola prison, only to be detained by guards before they managed to jump.

Fouganthine's wife helped him break out of the Pyhäselkä prison in 2002 when he was on an unsupervised furlough.

The couple managed to make it to Sweden in a stolen car before being arrested in Piteå in northern Sweden two days later.

In 2004, guards caught Fouganthine after giving chase for a few hundred metres after he tried to flee yet another Finnish prison and in 2006 he was on the run for several days before being arrested after escaping from a minimum security facility.

Jesus Christ, why isn't this man in a maximum security prison with no chance of escape??!!
11:14 November 23, 2011 by eppie
I think it is clear now that this guy is a threat and that he wont change ever, and therefor should be locked up.
11:25 November 23, 2011 by beeforsty
I guess we need Jack Baur tto track him down!!!
12:10 November 23, 2011 by StockholmSam
Just shoot the guy and move on.
12:12 November 23, 2011 by Svensksmith
Let him move to Rosengård. He'd fit right in.
12:56 November 23, 2011 by Abang Beruang
@Svensksmith, here comes Rosengård again. For Gods sake, leave Rosengård alone... See it just as it is! This is a case of serious abuse of the Scandinavian justice system by an evil human being..He needs to be taken care of in proper way! They need to take him seriously and put him behind bars for long time..

Key question: how in the world was someone with a less than exemplary behavior while in captivity even CONSIDERED a conditional release to a LIFE sentence, much less granted one? Does this mean that here in Scandinavia e Life Sentence is just a bunch of empty words?
14:36 November 23, 2011 by Streja
Finland is not Scandinavia.
14:39 November 23, 2011 by xguild
@Karex

Short answer, a sad and very pathetic yes. The Swedish system is an absolute joke and as an American living here I can tell you that the only thing keeping this society together is the fact that crimes like this are in fact very rare. Statistically speaking you are more likely to be a victim of a violant crime on a 1 day holiday in the US than you are in a lifetime in Sweden.

Personally I think its all the more reason Sweden needs to take a harder stance on capital crimes, life in prison should be life in prison, no exceptions. Its already enough that their is no death penalties in sweden, but as it stands I could go murder my entire family and no matter the circumstances I will be a free man in 7 years at the utmost. That is a sad fact.

I know that the U.S justice is considered somewhat crude but someone like this should have been put down years ago not codeled and given furloughs!!!

What will you do when he decides to go out on one of his little junkets and kill another family? Ahh maybe bake him a cake!!!!
15:25 November 23, 2011 by Svensksmith
He should change his name to Mint Jelly because he's on the lamb.

@Streja

You have repeatedly let us ALL know you are a teacher and most of us realise calling Finland "scandinavian" is like calling Scotland "Britain" . However you spend more time correcting peoples "homework" than you do on the issue.

The issue is that a mass murderer was realesed (why?) and escaped after a further arrest and is loose and at large and is probably dangerous. That is the info that needs addressing and NOT Karex who may have slipped a geological boundary line. You are not a teacher here, just another poster.
16:07 November 23, 2011 by Streja
yourkidding, I think context is important and a lot of times this site is bombarded with posts from people far away who wouldn't be able to find Sweden on a map. Sometimes Finland is part of Scandinavia and sometimes not. I felt that it was not staying on topic to discuss Scandinavian justice systems when we should be discussing Finnish prison security.

I think the case is closed as xguild has now stated how bad the Swedish justice system is when this fugitive has been in prison in Finland.
17:06 November 23, 2011 by yourkidding
@ Streja

The Swedish justice system is a joke, just ask an old person in Stockholm's supposed government hired care homes who are abused and no prosecution happens,or the rape victims who are told , boys will be boys and no one is prosecuted. But I agree, that has nothing to do with the Finnish Justice system. The scary part is that Finland is close enough, and since this psycho has already murdered people in Sweden, he could easily be on his way here.

Behind the rough exterior Juha is a really senstive guy. It's just that he and his family didn't recieve enough benefits when he was a child, which made him angry. Inadequate welfare programs=many prisoners, look at America. What more proof do you need? Hopefully Obama will fix this problem next term by borrowing money from China.
23:11 November 23, 2011 by markusd
I think it's a bit inaccurate to say he has a brain "the size of a raisin". I think he's actually made a very rational and intelligent decision.

He murdered a family of three, including a poor 15-year-old kid, broke out of jail 6 times, including once when he took a prison guard hostage and all he got was 21 years. That means that a human life is worth 7 years at most with every prison break worth a few weeks or so. We'll give him the hostage-taking thing for free.

So after being in jail for a while, he's presented with an opportunity to break out of jail and get laid by his girlfriend and, based on past experience, all he probably has to do is a few weekends of community service.

I think his decision makes perfect sense…if, of course, you're working with a system that's completely and utterly f#%!-ed up.
23:56 November 23, 2011 by maxbrando
This just shows what idiots you Swedes and Finns are. Pay Russia to take him. See how he likes that!

Skumdum: I think America should go to war with China...if they will just lend the US the money to do so.
07:11 November 24, 2011 by Investor612
xguild,

Maybe where you're from in the US has more danger in a day than a lifetime in Sweden.

Where I live-the upper Midwest-there's less crime than Sweden.
08:39 November 24, 2011 by karex
@Streja

I stand corrected then, perhaps I should have used the broader term "Nordic Countries", since Finland is not the only country around these parts which seems to be in need of a justice system review. In any case, as I'm not a teacher and Finland used to be a part of Sweden I assumed that it was still considered a Scandinavian country.

As far as corrections stand, I would just like to clarify that I am not living far away and know quite well where Sweden is, seeing as I live here.

Note that Valjakkala/Fouganthine was not in jail for the murders. He has been pardoned. As in most West European countries, a "life sentence" in Finland means in practise a prison sentence of a dozen years or so. Valjakkala has served his murder sentence and has been pardoned according to the usual procedure. Now he was in minimum-security prison for some other, small-time crimes that he did after being released - he has been sentenced for shoplifting, arson, illegal threat (using a fake gun) and driving under influence. The murder sentence is history. He hasn't been found guilty of any violent crime recently, though you could safely say that he is a bit soft in his head and unpredictable. But that is no grounds for keeping him in a maximum security prison. Therefore, nobody is screwing up, except perhaps the lawmakers. This is perfectly normal in our society. This is the way the (mostly social democrat) ethos of Nordic societies works. Hey, the guy is a victim of an oppressive, capitalist and patriarchal system.

Of course, that doesn't make sense to me. I agree that the Finnish justice system is a joke in cases like Valjakkala. On the other hand, I blame the Swedes, because Finland has copied the welfare state system with emphasis on ooman rights of criminals from there. It is ridiculous, but much of West Europe is just as ridiculous. The Americans are not similar, and lots of people are telling us how bad it is to have such a high incarceration rate and have people tortured in max security prisons.
