Sweden summons Iran envoy after storming

The Swedish foreign ministry sent for the Iranian ambassador on Wednesday to discuss what officials described as the "unacceptable" attack on the British embassy in Tehran.

"The ambassador was summoned to the foreign ministry this morning," ministry spokeswoman Linn Duvhammar told AFP.

Iran's head of mission, Rasoul Eslami, met with Robert Rydberg, the head of the ministry's Middle East and North Africa unit, a day after protesters rampaged through two British diplomatic compounds in the capital, one of which contained its embassy, tearing down the British flag and torching documents.

The protesters were reflecting official anger at Britain's decision last week to cut all relations with Iran's financial sector as part of a raft of new sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme.

Duvhammar said Sweden, like the rest of the European Union, considered the protests "unacceptable."

She would not disclose the details of Wednesday's meeting, but said the Iranian ambassador was reminded that "Iran is required to ensure the safety of the British embassy."

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Carl Bildt told Swedish news agency TT that Stockholm had no plans to recall its ambassador after Germany announced it was doing so.

"We underlined for him that the protection of embassies is a key responsibility for countries, and I think he got the message," he said.

Neighbouring Norway meanwhile announced earlier Wednesday it was temporarily closing its embassy in Tehran due to security concerns.

Britain on Wednesday ordered the closure of the Iranian embassy in London and shut its mission in Tehran after the attack.

I expect the Iranians are pretty worried now that Sweden has joined the fight!
20:01 November 30, 2011 by GLO
What else do you expect. They plan on destroying the Jewish State. Iran will do anything for a bomb. People, embasy's,money, just tools. We will see this in our life.

You cant understand what is evil.
20:19 November 30, 2011 by Twiceshy
If I am ambassador, I would simply answer: my profession is relation with Sweden and not with UK, so, go and speak with ambassador of Iran in London. Dot. Don't let yes-man politicians to ask you anything, Swedish politicians didn't get votes from Americans than from Swedes.
20:49 November 30, 2011 by skatty
"Unacceptable", is not enough. I suggest Sweden and any country that support human rights to close its embassy in Tehran.

Believe it or not, it would be more effective than sanction. Sanctions just affect Iranians, who don't have the right to protest, but an effective political isolation from many countries will harm Islamic republic.
20:55 November 30, 2011 by Iraniboy
I as an Iranian was outraged by this barbaric attack of these so-called students. I know that UK has been the only European country that hadn't ruled out military action on Iran recently. However unless they actually attack I strongly oppose such moves. I guess Sweden is only trying to follow its obligation as European Union member andn othing more. They are not going to do furthur steps.
21:04 November 30, 2011 by skogsbo
I know it's all political posturing on Sweden parts, sanction won't change anything, we can't Police it's borders and there are plenty of nations who will see Iran what it needs. We do need it's oil though, without which is the global melting pot, oil will go up in price.

If Israel wasn't armed to the teeth (by the US) then Iran wouldn't feel threatened enough to build it's weapons. It's cause and effect.

Trouble is if you clamp down on any nation, its military or its people too much and give them nothing to lose, then you will have war.
21:05 November 30, 2011 by star10
@Iraniboy: completely agree. What the Iranian government did (or tacitly allowed to happen) tells the gangster mentality of the so called Ayatolah Kohmini and his pet Ahmedinejad. I have a lot of respect for Iranians, their history and hospitable culture. And of course, the west is pushing Iran too much for it refuses to budge for Israel influence. Israel is not accused for having the bomb but Iran is accused and punished for having the "intention".
21:25 November 30, 2011 by RobinHood
A country so obviously disfunctional and out of control as Iran can not be trusted with nukes. Yesterdays incident will play very badly for Iran in the UN when the US uses that argument as justification for even more sanctions, or worse.
21:45 November 30, 2011 by Svensksmith
It would be a better world if no country had nuclear weapons, but sadly that is not the case. And, of course, any country that has nukes doesn't want the others to get them. Hypocrites, every one of them.

Truthfully though, would you sleep better at night if you knew countries like Iran or North Korea had nukes?
22:09 November 30, 2011 by Vitas
Carl Bildt has very nice job: Fighting with cyclops, who did not even see him!

Are you shure Iran has nuclear weapons? We had the same story in Irak - just reason for destroy country. USA lying and europens puppies (like Carl Bildt) just repeat this lie.
22:50 November 30, 2011 by jdbpogo
@star10

the difference is israel has had nukes for 50+ years and hasn't used them. if iran gets a bomb it will be used asap. they can not be allowed to do this. period.

As an Iranian poster, something to be cleared about:

1-The embassy of every country is the legal territory of that country wherever it is and nobody can let inside without legal permission. This is clear and the government and police should be highly blamed for sure.

2-Those who attacked the British Embassy in Tehran are not students, but members of "Basij" (pro government vigilante group) and revolutionary guards personnel in civil clothes. If your ignorant media are referring to them as students please keep in mind that the real Iranian students are not in front of British embassy but they are in prison for more than 2 years, or have immigrated to the west to escape these savages, or if they are still in Iran they will soon join one of the two groups mentioned earlier!

I appreciate the insights of the Iranian posters. I do not want a repeat of 1979.

Congrats to your buddies, Iraniboy! Good work!
00:04 December 1, 2011 by Evrin
this is just to divert public attention from the two massive explosions in the strategic missile sites.

don't you see these students!!! wore military boots!? and police daren't even touch them?!

If students in Iran had that much power their president would be someone like martin luther :)

So far, America is the only country who used atomic bomb against humans. Not just once but twice. And that was done despite the fact that Japan was going to surrender eitherway. So why bombing Nagasaki or Hiroshima?

Talking about sleeping relax at night, knowing America and his capacity to do evil, I can't sleep at night.
08:31 December 1, 2011 by Kevin Harris
@MoveFW123

".... Japan was going to surrender eitherway."

You really need to listen more carefully during your history class. Surrender had not been discussed at any level of the Japanese government of militiary before Hiroshima and Nagasagi. Even after the Emporer's decision to surrender, a powerful clique of senior Japananese officers very nearly conducted a coup to "rescue" the Emporer from his poor decision and fight on.

The two nuclear bombs were dropped on Japan for a different reason. Ask your history teacher what that was.
09:01 December 1, 2011 by asteriks
If one country in this world has nuclear bomb, all others have right to have the same thing, international politics is barbarian and every country must be able to protect itself. Watch what they did in Iraq (million killed civilians), Afghanistan, Libya, everywhere they misuse human rights to make war for oil. Therefore I will remember you all: Saudi Arabia is bigger dictatorship than Iran and nobody speaks about human rights in Saudi Arabia just because they collaborate with American oil business/corporations. America is well known for supporting dictators (and for misusing terrorism to break human rights). Therefore their Saudis help to all dictators who escaped. Saudi and Israel are the biggest problem in that region and American politicians (not people) are behind them. And we can see anti wall street protests in USA, police break human rights everyday, the same like in Gothenburg in 2001.
09:10 December 1, 2011 by star10
@jdbpogo: Israel hasn't needed to use the bombs. It has been the military super-power in the region. And internationally backed by all powerful countries. So there is no need to use the nukes.

And if history is to be used as evidence of nations abusiveness, look at what Isreal has been doing to the Palestinians, what the US did to Japan and its own native Americans, what Europeans did to their colonies, how the Spanish wiped out entire populations in Latin America, etc. You won't find a single abuse in Iran's history that matchs what has been committed by the nations who claim to have the moral authority to set the standards. So on what moral ground do you argue that one has to be allowed to have nukes and the other have to be punished for having the "intention"?

Why does the Swedish Foreign Affairs people always stick their noses in matters they have nothing to do with?
22:17 December 2, 2011 by Chickybee
Iran is a country in deep turmoil,

There is a huge drug addition problem and prostitution is widespread. The mutta or temporary marriage in acceptable in Shia Iran.

Young people cannot dress as they want and have to be controlled by so called Moral Police.

There are no human rights in Iran - Muslims cannot convert from Islam and the handful of Jews in Iran who have been there from the year dot are token.

This is an example of what many Muslims regard like Saudi as the ultimate Islamic state. A terrifying thought but a true one nevertheless.

It's funny how most of you are all experts on Iran when the only knowledge you have of the place is from western propaganda. The only nuke they have is in the warped minds of Israel and US psychopaths. The whole middle east drama is a geopolitical move by the west to restrict Chinas access to the region. It's simple, there's not enough of the black gold in the world to go around. I'm so surprised at how dumb most of you are but then again that's why the west is going bankrupt. You've allowed the london and wall street financiers to rip you off and supported your government as they shoveled money from your pockets to theirs. You don't see China and Iran stomping all over the world blowing other nations up. They're not borrowing billions to sustain themselves are they. Face the truth, your slaves with a belief that you have rights and freedom and everyday a little bit more is taken away and your willing to give it as long as your masters keep your in fear with predictions of financial catastrophe and bogey men from the middle east you'll shake and shiver and do as they say. You'll being played and your too dumb to know it.
