Swedes lose faith in the King: poll

Over a third of Swedes have lost faith in King Carl XVI Gustaf, while 32 percent would like to see Crown Princess Victoria take over, a new poll published on Wednesday shows.

The poll carried out by Novus Opinion on behalf of Sweden's TV4 news shows that 35 percent of Swedes have little or very little faith in the King, while only 30 percent support him and the rest remain ambivalent.

The monarchy retains the support of the majority of the population however, with 56 percent favouring its retention. Some 32 percent of those polled would like to see Crown Princess Victoria take over from her father.

The King has been swamped by scandal since the publication of an unathorized tell-all book, "Carl XVI Gustaf - den motvillige monarken" ("Carl XVI Gustaf - the reluctant monarch") last November.

The controversial book detailed the King's alleged visits to porn clubs, claims of an affair, as well as alleged connections to the criminal underworld.

While initial buzz from the book died down after a few weeks, reports surfaced in May that a close friend of the King had turned to a reputed gangster for help in burying incriminating pictures of the King and his friends.

Royal scandal once again swept across Sweden, with the King finally agreeing to a lengthy and highly-questioned interview with news agency TT in an attempt to clear his name.

The story re-surfaced recently when the King's close friend Anders Lettström confirmed that the King was aware his attempts to silence the scandals by arranging to pay off known gangster Mille Markovic.

The King publicly renounced Lettström's actions in an interview with news agency TT in May. When asked if the king had known about Anders Lettström's contacts with Stockholm's criminal underworld, the King responded with a definite no.

Abolish monarchy and save millions, billions of krona.

If this were regarding the US President, we would think in opposite terms... MOST people favor his retention! Typical media sensationalism.

That may be, but would you rather end up with a dictator ruling your country??

Somebody is trying to play games with The Local readers intelligence .

If only 35 % have little faith , does than mean that Sweden has lost faith in the King ?

Would The Local print the same headline in the State Ministers party got 35 % votes ?

If were the King , I would only be worried if my popularity was lower than that of the alliance parties .The Local needs to ponder why the King os more popular than 4 rulling parties combined .

By any standards ,56 % is very high for any public figure that is constantly stalked by greedy scandal-hunters .

@ Spo10

Are you sure it saves money with the abolition of the monarchy?

Be more specific; prove more specifically with the numbers and figures!

Do you think that an elected president is cheaper than a king "all the money spent for the campaigns every four years and all the money used to keep him in the office for four years?

Do you think that you can easily criticize a president as easyly as you can criticize a king?

@indeedmagnifier

I don't have figures or numbers to represent me. But if we took out the monarchy, the money that the tax payers paid for their expenses will be used in other important projects. I won't talk about presidents because it's a different story.

And why can't people criticize a king? These reports and scandals about the king were made public so don't expect for the people to be mum about it.

I support the King and the monarchy.

I also like and support Crown Princess Victoria, but at this time in her life, she is not ready to take the place of her father, who is perfectly capable of fulfilling his role as Monarch.

The King still has majority support in Sweden, so pick another target, there are dozens, there is one in particular who is allowed to wear her own uniform as a Swedish police officer.

The monarchy is vital to Sweden. The country needs a state representative who is not a politician. The political class in Sweden is already swollen, with too many levels of government and way too many people in parliament. Don't even get me started on the EU.

A hereditary non-politician figurehead to represent the state. This is an important check and balance. The worst possible alternative would be to replace the institution with a president... just another cushy job for the sociopathic, parasite politicians.

Make this beautiful young woman queen and eliminate any anxiety over the royalty. As a Swedish-American, I love her.

Well put @waffen & @big5 !

The monarcy does not hurt Sweden at all . Sometimes I get upset when some sections of the media treat the King as f he was a small child . He is the only person in Sweden who seems to have no right to express an opinion on anything . Its like he cannot say anything without risking to be rebuked by some wiseacre .

What a shame !

I think it's shameful of the king to put his family and reputation of this wonderful monarchy's history at such risk, if the allegations are true. Yes, the lovely princess and new mother would be a breath of fresh air as the queen, but I think she needs a few years to relax and build her family. As for her husband, he's probably a better person than most. I wish them many years of happiness.
