Malmö mayor in non-violence plea to residents

Politicians in Malmö are planning to write open letters to the community in a plea to help curb crime, a tactic which has already proven successful with local police.

“To those who have heard or seen anything in these different crimes, be sure you come forward as soon as possible to police and others,” the letter will say, the Social Democrat mayor of Malmö, Ilmar Reepalu, told Sveriges Radio (SR).

Reepalu wants to follow in the footsteps of the local police, whose letters to residents have sparked a strong reaction from the public in the last month, resulting in more tips and showing that residents are eager to help quash crime and solve the city’s escalating problems with violence

The police have received numerous tips, including help from people who are members of criminal gangs.

“We have seen a strong change in society. People want to help and contribute with as much information as possible,” said Mikael Mattsson of the Malmö police to the TT news agency.

While police continue to hunt for the perpetrator of the city's latest fatal shooting, which claimed the life of a 48-year-old father of four last week, they are confident that Malmö residents will continue to come to their aid in the solving of the crime and others.

“It’s clear that residents have had enough of what’s been happening in the city. This response can obviously give us a better insight into the murder case," said Mattsson.

Another key aim of the open letter planned by Reepalu is to urge residents not to buy goods and services on the black market.

But Moderate city council member Anja Sonesson is sceptical of such measures.

“I am doubtful, generally speaking, that politicians should go out and write letters giving advice to citizens,” she told TT news agency.

"On the other hand, there can be benefits of some form of campaign to inform Malmö residents about the connection between buying cheap goods on the black market and the serious criminality.

“We’ll see how it all comes out when we see the letter,” she said.

Despite a massive influx of resources, police in Malmö haven't had a breakthrough in any of their investigations in the spate of recent shootings in the city.

Since January 3rd, police have searched dozens of homes, more than 250 cars, and frisked 700 individuals, resulting in 52 people being suspected of minor drugs offences and one person being remanded in custody on suspicion of aggravated weapons offences.

"I think the image sometimes conveyed that the police aren't doing anything and are merely standing aside is totally wrong," the police's Mattias Sigfridsson told SR.

So once the violence spread beyond minorities that he does not like, he suddenly condemns the violence.

If he had tried to nip it in the bud when it started, I might have taken his word for it, but his words are just crocodile words in my opinion.

The Mayor should instead be writing letters to Reinfeldt for corporate tax breaks to companies to setup facilities nearby, and thereby start to reduce the level of youth unemployment among men.
15:51 February 7, 2012 by knonwhite
Keep dreaming... :) Upon reading the letter, all the criminals will get enlightenment and surrender to police..

Instead of pleading action is required..
15:54 February 7, 2012 by jostein
Maybe put the destroyer of malmö in jail instead of reading his letter? At least that would be justice.

#4 yep yep!

Sorry Mr Mayor, you made your bed, now sleep in it.

Reepalu the Jew hater. Who can take this idiot seriously now?
21:33 February 7, 2012 by blursd
I think Mr. Reepaly woke up one day and realized, "Oh crap ... this violence isn't just effecting Jews anymore!!!"

Meanwhile the rest of us are sitting here going, "no sh!@ sherlock."

At one point I was interested in moving to Malmo -- not now!
22:39 February 7, 2012 by TheWatchman
Maybe he should have dealt with it while it still only affected Jews...

Either way Malmo's done unless the Muslims are gone.

local residents didn't know whose side the cops were on until they read that fancy letter, is that what it is?
01:10 February 8, 2012 by Rod Munch
I'm guessing the people of Seved will be delivering these letters to each other since it's now a no-go zone for postal workers.

There's nothing wrong with lamenting the Israeli's for their treatment of Palestinians, but there IS something wrong with being 'anti Jewish' and 'protective of Muslims who commit crimes' because of some political ideology.

If Swedes can't wake up to the reality facing them to see through their social utopian hypocrisy, the whole world will mock them as they watch themselves drown and blame it on 'the capitalists'.

i cannot believe i went to Malmo only last july without sight of the tragic events of the past few months.

There were no letters to the community when Malmö was the focus of international news reports about the persecution and flight of the local Jews by the Islamic community. The good mayor told the Jews it was their own fault for supporting Isael, and then lied about it after.

Is he really the right man to be lecturing people about moral behaviour? The more he goes on about it, the more I want to count the spoons.

So this sad pathetic drunken old communist Reepaluis is going to save the day by penning a letter to all his fellow travelling Anti American, Jewish Hating, and Anti Western knuckle dragging buddies from the Middle East.

Good Luck!!

Asking criminals to become good has not worked anywhere else. Increasing law and order is the only way that works. Starting with the little things is key. Solving the big crimes is not as important as preventing the next; in a bad environment others will be ready to commit the next crime. Police enforcement of the small crimes is how one starts turning things around: delivering mail (rather than giving in to fear), stopping and removing graffiti, trash, and vandalism.

????The mind boggles.

How can these people (politicians) be so niaive?
13:16 February 8, 2012 by Chickybee
I'm sure when it comes to it immigrants who want Sweden to remain the way it was and Swedes will have the guts to stand up to this and tackle the issues.

Not every immigrant is bad and extremist Muslims and the right-wing extremists are equally as bad.

Sweden had made a monumental misatke by operating an open door immigration policy as there was no consideration of how third world immigrants would react to its laws, language and culture.

There is no multiculturalism - its discrete cultures living next to one another most often in mutual distrust.

@jomamas

No one is threatening 'Palestinians' for crashing trucks filled with explosives into schoolbuses into Israel. If Israel gets some blame, these people deserve blame as well, but this side is not ignored. However, I do agree that it isn't right to persecute a group because of what people rather far away are doing, and that's why I don't beat Muslims to a pulp with a baseball bat, I'm more civilized than they are, and also my city wouldn't stand for it.

The major has driven out most of the Jew trouble makers and soon they'll all be gone and Mallmo's problems will be over. Welcome to the future of all of Sweden. Glad I visited my grandparent's ancestral home a while ago because I won't be returning.

If the the residents of Malmo wish to protests against the Israeli policy, and has a supporter of the Labour party there are many political and social issues in which I am against our actual government, the best thing is to protest against the Israeli embassy in Sweden, people who want to protest in Israel can do it also in the "rose garden" in front of the government institutes in Jerusalem,

One thing is sure ,leave in peace the small and old Jewish community in Malmo, they are not our citizens, they do not live here ,they do not vote here, they do not make military service here, and they have nothing to do with the Israeli Palestinian conflict which is located 3500 km from Sweden in the middle East.

Now perhaps Swedes will understand that what they sow, so shall they reap. Most countries accept the idea of the Jewish people being the canary in the coal mines.

When the canary complains in the coal mine, it means there is a danger that nees to be addressed. Malmoe's mayor in fact inflamed the situation, blaming the Jews for being the problem. what a great communist he is, following in the footsteps of Stalin. Really, your socialism is not that far removed from the Kremlin after all. Maybe the term is too fanciful and perhaps the term "Commissar" is more accurate.

So far as blaming Israel for everything under the sun. It is a pity that ordinary Swedes just accept the malicious allegations against Israel, without first seeking discrepencies. One example I suppose is the following scenarion; if Malmoe was being attacked on a daily basis by having thousands of rockets, missiles and mortars aimed at the city, what would you expect your government to do?

Proportionate response by Israel would to do exactly the same to Gaza. They don't do that, because the kill would be far greater. Instead, they target the terrorists. I note that Norway is now considered as a war criminal because of the bombing of Libya. did Sweden also bomb Libya? If so, how do they know the targets were always military? Often these people hide and shell behind civilians, in mosques, schools etc. Please answer = thank you

This mayor is famous for inciting violence and ever since he took over Malmö has there been more and more violence so suddenly now he wants to talk about non-violence , he is responsible!!! Ilmar Reepalu has turned Malmö into the most famous Anti-Semitic city in Europe, where several NGOs warn Jews that it is dangerous to visit. It is not suprising that this hate has escalated to shooting in the streets while Reepalu sees, hears and speaks not. Reepalu has to go quicker the better
