Sweden at ’real risk’ of terror: government

Published: 14 Feb 12 08:36 CET | Print version

The Swedish Government has penned a new terror strategy, upgrading Sweden’s risk status since the last plan four years ago, calling for an ‘inter-agency cooperation’ in the fight to counter terror in Sweden.

“It's about prevention, stopping attacks and preparing ourselves in case something happens,” said Justice Minister Beatrice Ask to Svenska Dagbladet (SVD) newspaper.

Four years ago, the government’s plan for anti-terrorism stated that the risk of attack was ‘relatively low’. In the new plan, the government highlights the goals and starting points for Sweden’s counter-terror approach.

According to the paper, a possible approach in the prevention of terror could be making it easier to share information between the Swedish Security Service (Säpo), the Swedish Military Intelligence and Security Service (Must), and the National Defence Radio Establishment (FRA), currently constrained by confidentiality regulations in terms of handling personal data.

These three authorities have urged the government to revise laws to allow Sweden to have a greater chance of responding to threats.

In the strategy, the government stated that they are willing to "remove the obstacles to an efficient and modern inter-agency cooperation” according to TT news agency.

However, the proposal to allow revocation of a Swedish citizenship for those who withhold terror connections are not included in the new strategy.

“It seems impossible to get this through politically,” Ask told SVD.

'However, the proposal to allow revocation of a Swedish citizenship for those who withhold terror connections are not included in the new strategy.'

Very logical.

If I am planning a co-ordinated bombing of the entire downtown of Stockholm (like the train station attacks in Madrid) I would be highly annoyed if I was asked who was helping me plan this attack, and it would simply be unfair

if my citizenship was removed for not co-operating with the authorities for this.

My right to privacy and citizenship is so important that it should protect my plans to end the citizenship (by murder) of 1000 Swedes.

Fear mongering. Sweden - Please don't go the way of the UK.

The right to personal freedom and privacy is greater than any danger posed by terrorism.

Just curious.

Have your comments been censored from UK blogging sites for being overly symptathetic to regimes that are deemed unfavorable to your government?

If some bored security officer in a town far from London runs a search engine on your email and finds the words 'bomb', 'assissinate', etc..., and then reads it to find out that you are simply joking around, has your life and freedom been completely crippled?

Nothing wrong with having a lot of freedom to enjoy life, but that freedom is not infinite, in the same way that freedom of speech is not infinite. In my view, but perhaps not yours, your right to privacy does not extend to the freedom to plan and then commit crimes that kill others, especially when the intention is to kill as many people as possible.

Coming from a country that had 500 - 600 people killed each year when I grew up, I don't see much of a risk here!

The more non western immigration the more need for a police state & with a police state comes the loss of civil liberties for everyone. Its the same with welfare, welfare will be cut for everyone and already is.

The answer is to kill political correctness and attack the real problem instead of everyone suffering. Toughen up Sweden or lose civil liberties, welfare, safety, culture, living standard, etc.

@e1zorro

I agree with your comments about not going the same way as the UK. The UK finds it very difficult to deport a man who entered the country illegally, who was found guilty in Jordan of being a terrorist. The European Court of Human Rights, an unelected group of non judiacially trained people made the ruling not to deprt this piece of human garbage in case the Jordanians had or will torture him. No matter what this person's aims were in slaughtering innocents.

Unfortunately, most international groups won't work as every country will see the problem - if it considers terror a problem in a different light. That is why terror internationally succeeds. At least Canada has recognised who the main culprits are. Will sweden? Hmmm, I doubt it.

Would the policitians who opposed this and made it impossible please step forward. It's never wrong to put your name to your opinions. If/when someone loses a life or a limb to terrorism within Sweden, it would be nice to know which Swedish polticians from which parties helped that terrible loss come about.

@ Kevin H.

100% Agree.

Any maybe have two pieces of legislation, one that actually allows the agencies to communicate with each other, and a 2nd bill that includes the ability to remove citizenship for people who refuse to divulge the identity of their fellow terrorists.

This way politicians can support one or both, and then accept responsibility for

the consequences of their decision.

And the responsibility on the government in power now is to at least propose the removal of citizenship measure, and then see how far it goes toward becoming law.

...Whenever the few wants to take away more of people's rights, they'll first scare them to submission!

There can be no anti- this anti- that that will make much difference unless when and only when the people are given back their rights and responsibility to be their neighbors' keeper!

If we start caring and watching over one another, it will be hard if not impossible for any beast to terrorise the community! So stop wasting people's money, rather give the people back their power and the 'lost' spirit of 'COMMUNITY' where people live as 'family' and protect one another, correcting those that did wrong with 'brotherly love' not vengence and hate, that is the best security for all.

On the other hand, handing over everything about security of the 'community'/'state' to the 'security services', can only push the people further away from performing their natural responsibility of taking care of their communities and eachother.

At least, no one can protect your home more than you the owner, 'cause you knows the corners better. Just an idea for a better society.

@ Fredio

You seem to be suggesting that, rather than increasing the ability of the security people to do their work to keep us safe, we should just love each other more.

Why don't you take that message to the airports of the world, and tell them to immediately shut off all their X-ray equipment and stop frisking all men, women, and children whenever the metal detector goes off, and to just make an appeal to passengers' community spirit instead?

These airport safety measures inconvenience all of us whenever we fly, and yet I would not want it any other way, and I feel a lot safer because of these measures. The ability of security staff the run anonymous scans on emails for keywords or to see if you or I are planning an attack with a group of terrorists is no different.

Idealism will not help to improve our safety in this flawed world.

Wont be long before some one cries racism because they are a muslim and where being spied on and every will lose their jobs who was involved. Unless they convict him then he will probably only get 10 years I think that any one charged with terror charges should be subject to capital punishment.
22:47 February 14, 2012 by TheWatchman
That risk was much lower before you started allowing 'Swedes' into Sweden. If you get my drift. So if someone has connections to a terror group, they should be allowed to keep their citizenship. Hmm ok. The Sweden of Old would say 'Let's deal with these beasts!' The Sweden of Now says, 'How dare you call him a bad person! He might be in a terrorist group but he has every right to live here as you do!'

I think there is terror happening in Sweden NOW, just take a look at what is happening to Malmo and several other Swedish cities.
08:55 February 15, 2012 by karex
Hmmm, so there has been an attempt to revoke citizenship of anyone one who withholds terror connections but anyone know if there is at least the possibility of revoking citizenship of someone who has been found guilty of terrorism?

Otherwise even if the other law passes, the terrorist will ill, and avoid deportation and loss of citizenship by ratting everyone one else out, eller?
