Bildt wary of 'blow up' in Iranian nuke talks

Published: 23 Mar 12 12:38 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/39848/20120323/

Sweden's Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, hailing plans to resume talks between global powers and Iran on its suspect nuclear drive, warned Friday against a "blow up" of the negotiations.

"We're looking foward to a resumption of the dialogue," Bildt said when asked for comment on a recent agreement to restart long-stalled talks between six world powers and Tehran.

"I don't expect there will be a quick resolution of issues because the gulf of mistrust is so enormously deep," added Bildt as he went into talks with European Union foreign ministers. "It will take some time."

But he added: "I sincerely hope that no one wants to blow up the diplomatic process.

"That would be an act of international irresponsibility of the first order," he stressed.

The EU's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is heading the talks with Iran on behalf of Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States.

But a time and venue still need to be agreed.

Western powers suspect Iran is seeking to build a nuclear bomb, a charge denied by Tehran, which says its atomic programme is for peaceful purposes.

After several failed rounds, the last in Istanbul just over a year ago, the powers agreed to resume the talks last month after receiving a written commitment by Iran to address the nuclear issue at the negotiations.

The move to return to negotiations came amid increasing fears of a possible
Israeli attack.

It is bad that Iran develops nuclear weapons. However, it is equally bad that Israel, North Korea, India, Russia, USA, France, Germany, Canada, Brazil and maybe other countries also produce nuclear weapons. So, the question is: what is worse? I believe it is worse that people who already dropped nuclear bombs against another country continue to develop them.
13:35 March 23, 2012 by moji
They're going to play with their power card (call it negotiations) in order to:

1- Settle the oil reservoir shortage problem in the near future (approx. after 2017, on other hand Iran has oil till 2095 with the maximal sum of oil/gas reservoirs in the globe).

2- Manage to make the Iranian government to comply with the international community (indeed i.e. the western powers and the countries following them). As you may know, the Iranian government (particularly its leadership) has some interpretation of Islamic thoughts that works as an anti-western-power weapon. They believe to run against the "longstanding contempt" of imperialism.

3-The nuclear issue is also important. Iran (as a country on the other side) is going to enter the nuclear fuel business--- in a century of fuel shortage. Having both oil and nuclear fuel business gives control and power.

No doubt, it is an important country. It depends how they behave, and will be behaved.

No doubt that many countries other than Iran developed NP , but Iran is the only one country among all the other s who threat to wipe another country from the map.

why dont all the countries in the world get rid of their nukes? why do we need nukes on this planet anyway? have we forgotton hiroshima and nagasaki?

No doubts about Mr. Bildt being a man of peace and in quest of a safer world - in preference to one that is " less safe"

You'd better get your facts rights! Israel and the US have threatened to attack Iran more than the other way around! The guy who said that sentence is not Iran and it will leave office in a year and can never come back. Even France has threatened to use their Nukes! Sorry but all these fuss about Iran's nuclear program is just very very big lie.
21:20 March 23, 2012 by Jeff10
The ruling elites of Iran desire to live in the stone age. Therefore, in the interests of solidarity with the regime's aspirations and to show the world that the US understands the supports the dreams and desires of all peoples, the US should bomb Iran back to the stone age.

I hope Israel defends itself preemptively and takes care of this problem. Aqua Velvajad is a maniac.
08:53 March 24, 2012 by Iraniboy
@calebian22

There is no such a thing as "defending by preemptive attack" It is just a term used by warmongers to justify their blood thirsty urges.
11:43 March 24, 2012 by cowboykodp
Caleb;

Israel has been threatening Iran for 30 years. It is a big bluff.

Israel would be flattened within an hour of any "preemptive" strike.

This entire Iran business is way overblown.

It has nothing to do with security and everything to do with balance of power.
13:10 March 24, 2012 by bcterry
"Israel would be flattened within an hour of any "preemptive" strike."

By who?

Ahmadinejad, and the (cough) "supreme one", have threatened to wipe Israel off the map on more than one occasion.
15:07 March 24, 2012 by calebian22
Well, remember what happened to the last big mouth leader in the Middle East who said he was going to wipe Israel off the map. Nasser got his butt handed to him in 6 days. Preemptively defending, attacking, I frankly don't care. Israel has my blessing to destroy Iran to protect itself. Strength and not talk is what is respected in the Middle East.
16:42 March 24, 2012 by cowboykodp
Caleb;

One difference....Persians are not Arabs. Arabs are all hot air, much like your buddies in the NatanYAHOO regime.

85% of Israelis don't want a war, because they are the ones who will feel the pain, not some smart ass ex-pats living in Sweden.

bcterry;

Either you're 5 years old or completely misinformed. Iran has the biggest conventional missile system in the world. They have the top 10 standing army in the world.

I personally think they have a few Nukes also, purchased from the old Soviet stock.

Does that answer your "by who" question?

So, you people need to think before you declare war on other countries from your safe homes.
17:15 March 24, 2012 by bcterry
"Either you're 5 years old or completely misinformed. Iran has the biggest conventional missile system in the world."

Really?

"Ballistic missiles are China's primary prompt long-range offensive weapon," Lemkin told the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission.

"They have one of the most active development programs in the world and the largest deployed conventional ballistic missile force of any nation."

"Arrow, a joint project of Israel and the United States, is one of the most advanced missile defense programs currently in existence. It consists of high-altitude interceptors, deployed in Israel, able to seek and destroy incoming ballistic missiles in their terminal phase, i.e. during the final minutes of descent."

"I personally think they have a few Nukes also, purchased from the old Soviet stock."

"Relations between Iran and Russia have Hit a Cold Spell"

Andre de Nesnera June 28th 2010

Analysts, such as Robert Legvold with Columbia University, say over the past few years, Russian officials have become convinced that Iran may well be enriching uranium with the goal of at least creating the option of developing nuclear weapons.

"They are somewhat less alarmed over the urgency or the imminence of that than the United States, but they have now agreed with the Europeans and the Americans that the Iranians are not acting in good faith in order to demonstrate a commitment to peaceful and domestic use of nuclear fuel, whatever may be the alternative motives that drive them. And therefore the Russians are concerned about Iran and they certainly would not like to see a nuclear Iran—I think there's no question on that score," he said.

They want also to make sure that the United States and Israel do not feel cornered into taking military action. I think that's Russia's primary interest right now—to on the one hand deliver a message to Iran that they will not support them unequivocally, and on the other hand not allow the military action to go forward," said Mukhatzhnova. "

"Israel has my blessing to destroy Iran to protect itself."

With people like the humankind will soon disappear off the map.

What's the difference between you and Ahmadinejad then?! He and his supporters also have the blessing to destroy you, your family and your countrymen to protect Iran. From practical point of you, do you think that 4 million Iranian living outside Iran will let your sleep one day in peace if you destroy Iran?!

@Iraniboy

I believe the Iranians abroad can be considered as an important factor to secure Iran from a stupid attack. However, you know almost all these media stuff are "power talks" and many people are not well-educated though to can make theirselves clear about what is going on . . .

Mate. You are facing a never ending story of useless discussions. That "googler" is always right, whatever you want to prove. Save your energies and you know what. Walls do not think.
20:22 March 24, 2012 by Iraniboy
@moji

That's true. We can always try to find common grounds like basic human values which is for example avoiding the killing of innocent people. However when someone like @calebian22 has a blessing for that then we can't find any common human value and the only thing seems to be to remind him the consequence of his dangerous wishful thinking!

Mate. You are facing a never ending story of useless discussions. That "googler" is always right, whatever you want to prove. Save your energies and you know what. Walls do not think. "

And the self proclaimed "debate master" enters the fray, and as usual, no comment on the content.

Let's have a look at his previous "master" debating skills.

""And everything you have written up until now, is a perfect example of just how gay you are. It would have been better to be a dictator, but, you choosed your career and you can do with your hole whatever you like. There must be a good market in Sweden, where they say that 50 % of men are married and the other 50% is gay. And I am quite sure that you do not belong to th married 50%."

And yet another gem,

You mean your hole just gets getting deeper and deeper. Do not lend it that often BIG MAN, because I will continue getting smaller and smaller until I disappear, but you will keep on making your hole bigger and bigger until an army can penetrate in it.

Unfortunately, I will be so small, but so small, that I will not be able to laugh, laugh, laugh and laugh about a gay who wanted to be a man and became a lesbian. Your progenitress will be really proud by then. "

His "master" debating skills left me tears of laughter, ROFLMAO.

BTW, are you ready to address the 2001 edict of your criminal pope under the watch of his criminal predecessor, or are you still lacking the courage, and prefer to put the sanctity of your church above the sexual abuse of INNOCENT CHILDREN!!!?

I'll predict door number 2.

comment number 1: "It is bad that Iran develops nuclear weapons. [...]"

I don't think UN and IAEA are as sure about this statement!

One might think this is all about manipulating the public into accepting a confrontation with Iran! You might want to check videos on the internet with these tittles:

18:14 March 30, 2012 by ferdio
Well, Carl shouldn't DIALOGUE have been the first step in 'true' conflict resolution, before drums and incitement of war and destruction?

Why didn't such 'diplomacy' be used in Ivory Coast and Libya, to save the thousands that was slaughtered, in the name of giving them 'freedom'?

Maybe, I studied the wrong 'Peace and Conflict' studies and 'International Relations'... But, I am sure that if not for the sanity of Russian/China, the Al-Qaeda running Libya now would have extended their territory to Syria, setting the whole area on fire (Presumably)...

Regardless of our views of the Iranian 'mad man' that wants to wipe Israel out, or his Syria ally, the natural law of fighting just war does not arise, when the Syrian government seem to be yielding to the pressure for reforms, releasing prisoners, allowing multi-party system, giving amnesty to the protesters... Well, even without being devils advocate, one may accept that no country in the West will go that far, in name of peace.

In as much as I have little regards for dictators like him, we must always remember that what we may not wish for ourselves may be poisonous or evil to serve others.

After destroying Libya, and handing it over the terrorists that slaughter innocent people especially 'black Africans', we never hear any condemnation of the same group that claimed to be interested in saving people on assumption that Gadhafi will kill them. Yet the same people are now doing the actual killing, and nothing is happening..

It is really sad for the peace of our world especially when the West seem to be in decline and the bigger force (Chinese, India, Russian etc.) are taking over learning the West style of conflict resolution. Are we going to accept them bombing European countries or US cities in the name of freedom for 'protesters' when they get the power to do so? Or arming any dissatisfied group that call for regime change?

No doubt that even Russia and China under normal circumstances will support 'nuke' in the hands of fanatics in Iran, but the Western approach so far has made them look like 'innocent' and harmless, winning them underserved friends, out of sympathy

Please, let 'common sense' of justice be brought back..
16:33 April 3, 2012 by Berrgurra
Tony Blair told Parliament that Irak had nuks that could be sent to England in 24 hours. US told d UN that Irak had cars driving around making poison gas etc.

Now comes a question if Iran really will make nukes and if so do they want to bomb Israel.

I have not read or heard anything that proves either of these.

It is however accepted as a fact by all countries I think who continuous to make life difficult for the Iranian people. Israels Prime minister and Obama have agreed to wait with bombing until after election which I can understand from a voting perspective. Compared to the indices against Irak these assumptions seems even weaker. I can not understand the person who gives his blessing for bombing. Can someone explain to me what the facts are ?
00:50 April 5, 2012 by indeedmagnifier
The most stupid thing that I ever heard in my life is the above statement of Carl Bildt. He and the Iranian regime are the same as one soul in two bodies. In fact, he is actually the Iran's Swedish protector! He has been in his entire carrier the closest western friend and supporter of the Islamic regime and other dictators. It is long time that the time has run out for diplomacy.

The only purpose of Iranian regime is access to the nuclear weapons and Carl Bildt is going to provide enough time for them to do so! Moreover, they want to have that for threatening all the world and not only Israel. They are the biggest liars ever!

Unfortunately, I do not see any real good comment in this subject matter in this page. Don't argue in the comments it does not help any one, don't fall in the trap

Before falling in the trap of arguing and following the way that the cheaters want you to follow, try to learn about that country enough to make you able to comment then go for commenting!

Few real true comments better the hundreds of fake comments or questioning and replying.
