Eight myths about Swedish women revealed

Published: 27 Apr 12 17:16 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/40522/20120427/

Do you know a Swedish woman? Or are you a Swedish woman? In that case you have probably come across some of the more popular myths that stick to these legendary creatures like flies to honey.

These vary from accurate to… less than accurate, and it can be hard to know what is true and what is sheer fallacy.

Therefore, The Local has compiled a small list of preconceived ideas about our homeland’s goddesses of the north, handy for those who are meeting – or wanting to meet -women from this neck of the woods.

Whether you want to keep this as a record for future reference or whether you want to prove us wrong – here is where you find out. And don’t forget- you heard it on The Local – so it must be true.

Check out The Local's guide to Girls in Sweden here.

You are really scraping the bottom of the barrel on this one. I think that there could have been at least 100 other things worth writing about.
18:09 April 27, 2012 by calebian22
"she will expect you to do your share AND THEN SOME" Ha! So true.
18:19 April 27, 2012 by umeåstar
I don't think I can read this article.. its soooo long with sooooo many facts...
18:42 April 27, 2012 by Puffin
This has to be one of the crappiest articles ever written for the Local - and that is saying something - just full of superficial stereotypes and pictures

yuck
19:05 April 27, 2012 by polymorf
This is the kind of mindless drivel I would expect from "Teen Vogue", along with "Ten secrets to drive your Swede crazy in bed", and not from a leading news translation/aggregation service.

If your mission was to increase registered users by annoying readers so much that they had to comment: then bravo. Mission accomplished.
19:06 April 27, 2012 by Benzed
Extremely low quality article, laughable to think that an editor feels this was worth paying somebody to "write". At least give some detailed insight (opinion, essentially) to expand on each of these "myths".

Ha,ha,ha thanks for the chuckle today!!! :o)
20:57 April 27, 2012 by rybo1
I'm not going to read the article, but I'll give you a myth. And, that myth is that Swedish women are beautiful. As we can all see, it simply isn't true.
22:03 April 27, 2012 by Flygger
I wonder if most of the comments here were posted by the Femonazia..

It's a bit of fun for goodness sake and not meant to be in depth reporting..

Move to Holland and chill..

Utter drivel.

Very educational...which I'd known all this before I moved here ;))

(kidding, I knew it already)

Written by a woman???

Shouldnt she really know better?
00:31 April 28, 2012 by jfagerquist
The articles us great for a Friday read. One thing is for certain, anyone who appreciates the sight of a beautiful woman should have a physical therapist or chiropractor on speed dial because you're guaranteed a case of whiplash.
01:05 April 28, 2012 by Spuds MacKenzie
This is all B.S.!! I have been with many Swedish women (and now engaged to one) and the stereotypes ARE true! Swedish women are the hottest, sexiest, wildest things on the planet...those who say otherwise are jaded or inexperienced. :)
03:34 April 28, 2012 by SecondGen
That hat in picture 2, is there a place those can be found online? (Blue and yellow viking hat with horns)

Thanks!
07:52 April 28, 2012 by calebian22
Spuds,

Dating and engaged only? Marry her and watch the cold set in. When was the last time you saw a Swedish couple (who had been together over 2 years) holding hands? Affection is socially defined in Sweden. It is okay to be demonstrative if you are young or new love but after that, Arctic chill.

And those who scream, "mine is not like that," there are exceptions to every generalization. Since I live in Småland maybe my experience is the exception but, for my region it seems to be the norm. However, I hope your experience stays warm.
08:16 April 28, 2012 by Spuds MacKenzie
@calebian22 Sorry you have had such bad luck with your Swedish women. I have been living with this one for 6 years (engaged for the past 2) and we grow more passionate towards each other each year. We have several friends who are married couples who, yes, still hold hands with each other daily.
09:00 April 28, 2012 by tendance
@Spud Mackenzie, U've been 2gether for 6years and u have several children?? Are u kidding me?? Do u have so many children that you can not even count?? Are u an African King??
09:12 April 28, 2012 by Scambaiter
No, tendance...he's an American bigot.

Holy sh!t, ITS LEVITY!! Some of you people need to go away...forever.
11:30 April 28, 2012 by Abe L
#2 - This is why Asian and South American women are so popular with Swedish guys. They still know what a guy wants from a woman.
12:02 April 28, 2012 by SwedePea
I feel I wasted 5 minutes of my life with this, it's not funny or witty or factual... or anything for that matter. Please up your standards.
12:36 April 28, 2012 by strixy
@#4

Could not agree more. Who wrote this? A horny teenager?
13:31 April 28, 2012 by zooeden
Ha ha Loved it Becca. You forgot one: Nice girls swallows, bad girls spit; Almost All swedish girls spits on the street!!! :D

What an idiotic article.

Slow news day in Sweden?
06:26 April 29, 2012 by Smiling Canuk
My wife tells me the best Swedish gals are the ones who had parents who moved to Canada. :-) LOL!! She's "Swedish" but has never been there.

I agree what a pathetic article. Does the Local still think its the 1960's ?
11:58 April 29, 2012 by Rishonim
@Skogsbo & Spuds MacKenzie. I bet you anything your Swedish mate/wife has cheated on you. I did a little field research myself by going after married /Sambo Swedish women and although they initially claim to be incredibly happy in their relationship; within 48 hours they were about to give up the goods. At this point a backed away from concluding the deal cause I just wanted to prove a point. I conducted this experiment with women between the age of 25-57 over a period of four years ;-)
05:32 April 30, 2012 by ITkiwi
Wow - thanks for reminding me why I don't bother reading TL any more - apart from a nothing story - why don't you invest in a decent photo editor/ viewer (it's such a clunky, amateur annoying online experience).
08:07 April 30, 2012 by Marc the Texan
The Local is just going for advert impressions by putting up that tedious gallery. Not a good policy. For me once shame on you, fool me twice. We won't be fooled again;D
15:00 April 30, 2012 by stupidexpat
Total garbage journalism. the local has truly lost it the plot. have you got nothing better to write about? then some 19 year olds 1st year of journalism school project. what happened the local? you used to be cool

Can't believe the number of angry posters. Humour is humour, levity is levity. Some of it is funny, some less so. There are places to judge the journalism practices of any publication, but the jokes section is not one of them.

I presume that a number of readers have learned English as a 2nd language, and based on my reading of many posts for many TL articles, there appears to some inability to spot or appreciate humour, and it often appears to be more urgent to them point out a typo on line 36 than to to comment on the content of a story, even a story that might have a title such as: 'Breivik escapes custody with 12 kilos of weapons grade plutonium'
10:14 May 3, 2012 by Baz_Baz
Once again Swedish women (or Swedish people in general) trying to show to the world that they are feeling good about themselves... No matter how much you pretend, you are the saddest people on earth and you don't get the attention from men that women in other countries simply take for granted (Tell me the truth: Do men in Sweden ever look at you???) And the combination of femininity and masculinity has made Swedish women that could be described in only one word: CHEAP!

Come on guys, chill out. This was not intended to be serious!

About Swedish girls, there are a lot of standards. But it is just like anywhere in the world. There are gorgeous girls and there are not so pretty. Some are cold, some are warm, some are rude, some are nice, some are quite open minded, some are quite racist. I guess if you come here looking for girls, you have to spend a while trying to understand Swedish way of thinking so you can avoid cultural shocks, which is the reason why there are so many bitter guys (I think).

I don't really have much more to say, I came here for other reasons than the girls. My girlfriend comes from the same country as me so cultural shock is not something I had to deal with.
00:17 May 6, 2012 by DavidtheNorseman
Anyone taking an article claiming Swedish girls will rule the World as serious journalism needs some time off, food and sleep :-)

@DiegoP - you are right. Part of the problem is that Swedes generally LOOK like other Europeans (especially Dutch and German) but tend to have very different outlooks on issues/life - I still contend it is at least partly a linguistic divide that causes the psychological divide.

As a final chuckle I still think Swedes are easier to understand the motivations/thoughts of than Finns LOL

Norwegians are, of course, the most normal and level-headed of humanities families :-)
11:31 May 7, 2012 by EP
All the girls in Sweden pretty much look the same, converse, leggings, hair in a pony-tail. Nothing sensual or sexy about the girls, particularly when they snus or spit. And this idea that Swedish women are so hot, is really far-flung.
06:30 May 8, 2012 by Lavaux
Pretty accurate and fair except for the ruling the world thing. I've found that Type A women easily pass off bluster as competence because no one is willing to challenge them - would be violation of feminism, you see. In the wider world you've got to be able to punch above your weight.
22:50 May 10, 2012 by Smokebox
So that explains why I have better luck with the finish girls????
10:12 May 15, 2012 by klubbnika
#4 @Puffin

You missed the point with the article, buddy. And the article is spot on.

#23 @ Abe L

Only unattractive low quality Swedish men go for for Thai or South American women. Swedish guys generally want to be with their own kind, somebody who is culturally close to them.
