Rail power outage leaves 3,000 Swedes stranded

Some 3,000 people were delayed in southern Sweden on Thursday night when a power outage stopped all traffic between Höör and Hässleholm, leaving passengers stranded.

“We were stuck for five hours and were told nothing,” said passenger Lena Jansson to daily Dagens Nyheter (DN).

“First everyone was angry. Than they went quiet. Now we are mainly tired.”

Passengers reported confusion and too little information from Swedish national rail company SJ.

At SJ, however, they said they were doing what they could.

“It is a pretty big traffic disruption and we are trying to keep passengers up to date with developments as well as we can. But of course this isn’t going to be totally friction-free when we are dealing with thousands of people. We are trying to get there one thing at a time, “ said SJ press spokesman Dag Rosander to DN.

According to SJ, the disruption was caused by a power line falling down between the two southern towns Höör and Hässleholm around 3pm on Thursday. Some fifteen trains were affected and 3,000 passengers were left stranded.

Weary passengers were finally bussed to Hässleholm where they could continue by train toward Stockholm or coach to Höör. From Höör, trains to Malmö were running.

According to the paper, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) is dealing with the problem, but delays are expected to continue until midday on Friday.

that is not the biggest problem, we were so late we had to take a taxi, since SJ says they wont refund the delay that you can not get your last bus to your city with the monthly card, so unless you pay the "most expensive" tickets, they wont help you get home. even if their trains are about 4 hours late

They really need to update the train infrastructure here....its lagging 40 years behind!

Again?? That is becomming every day life in Sweden, A banana country rail system appears to be more reliable lately,

Pure incompetence in SJ. They dont even have the basic courtesy of communicating wth their customers, shame shame shame

So it's happening in Sweden too? Not just India? Great, now we have even more in common with India. The sooner we start s.hitting in our yards and wiping with our wingers, then also eating with the same hand, the better for us.

"and we are trying to keep passengers up to date with developments as well as we can"

Oh please !! I was a victim, up to date information???, the only information anyone could get was an announcement in the train, nothing more :'( !! We were stranded for more than 2 hrs, no rail staff, no police, no ONE to tell which bus to get on, etc.,

The irony is i was returning from my home country INDIA and was laughing my ass off when 2 days back the Indian govt., failed to say the exact reason for the grid failure which affected almost 600 million and was saying to my family, take Sweden for example the most effective country.... And am not complaining here but am saying my opinion " Sweden is NOT ready for these type of disasters"... The worst part is not that there was NO guidance or whatsoever, it's the people who couldn't / wouldn't raise their voice and ASK ?? All they could say is "jag vet inte" Tolerance here too?? Ofcourse after running to one corner of the stn to other dragging my baggage after almost 30 hrs of flight journey I managed to get onto a bus. Thanks for the bus SJ but i expect these type of disasters to be dealt with a bit faster. Ofcourse in India it would have been way more confusing and irritating, but for a DEVELOPED country like Sweden, people have some expectations.. Inspite of this for me Sweden is a wonderful country, and i have visited few more european countries and Swedes are the best still :):) Jag alskar dig sverige :) !
