The Swedish charity worker who was shot in the chest in Pakistan last week died in a Stockholm hospital on Wednesday night.

Sveriges Television (SVT) reported that 71-year-old Birgitta Almeby died at the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm late on Wednesday.

She was receiving treatment after having been flown home to Sweden for specialist medical care for her injuries.

Niclas Lindgren, director of the missionary wing of the Pentecostal church in Sweden, said it was hard to come to grips with Almeby's killing.

“Birgitta worked with social issues like education and health care. If she’d worked with political issues, it may have been understandable why she got murdered,” he told The Local.

“There was no indication that there was a threat to her life. It was very unexpected. As it is now, we don’t know what the motive was or why she was killed.”

Lindgren added that it was "too early to say" whether the murder will affect the missionary's work in Pakistan.

Speaking with Christian newspaper Dagen, a representative from the Pentecostal church in Köping said Almeby's injuries had resulted in serious brain damage, leaving little hope that she would ever fully recover.

Almeby was attacked in Lahore, Pakistan's second largest city, on the eastern border with India last Monday.

"She was returning from her office and was attacked when she arrived in front of her home in the Model Town neighbourhood," Awais Malik, a senior police official told AFP.

She was working in Lahore for the US-founded Full Gospel Assemblies, which describes itself as a "church fellowship" with congregations all over the world.

The woman had lived in Pakistan for almost forty years.

Malik said on Monday that the culprits had not yet been identified.

The missionary wing of the Pentecostal church in Sweden still has one family in Pakistan, according to press officer Noomi Lind:

“But they are safe at the moment, as far as we can see. So they are going to stay for the time being,” she told The Local.

Lahore, a city of eight million, suffered a string of high-profile bombings blamed on Taliban and al-Qaeda-linked militants in 2010.

In August 2011, US development worker Warren Weinstein was kidnapped after gunmen tricked their way into his Lahore home. Pakistani officials believe he is being held by al-Qaeda and Taliban extremists in Pakistan's lawless
northwest.

In April, a British Muslim Red Cross worker was beheaded nearly four months after being kidnapped in the southwestern city of Quetta.

First of all i really feel shame what happened to her.If it never happened before with her in forty years and how come it happened now. Did you think that? yes there are few bloody insane people living there but don't judge everybody in the same category.

first of all we are sad on that incident and her death. we are with her family in that sad movement.

2. she spent 40 years in pakistan that means that people of pakistan did not hate her, her work, her nationality or her religious views thats why she was safe for 40 years.

3. every one know that we are fighting with terrorists and almost we are fighting from front. in which lot of countries and groups want to show pakistan fail state that why they some times attack on foreigner so that foreigner leave pakistan. if you guys follow previous pakistani news then you can easily find such case in which police found outsider in pakistan do attack on foreigners in pakistan. so i guess its also one of such case. otherwise there is no logic to kill her.

4. we are facing security problem due to terrorists so it make it difficult to secure every one but its not excuse pakistan must do investigation and hang killers.

5. and please dont judge that pakistani society is very backward and women are in very bad situation. that only such people can think who never visit pakistan. we are much developed society where female have very important role.

Didnt she take a hint after all the "death to the west" and shooting teenage girls that want to study, and politicians who get murdered for suggesting blasphemy laws need to be changed.

Pakistan is a country heading to become a pro talibaan. The lives of women, children, minorities (Shias, Hindu, Christians) is always at stake irrespective of security measures. Daily most of the minorities are becomming victims of target killings.

Swedish government should protect these minorities whose lives are cheaper then food.

I send my sincerest condolence to the victim's family and friends. It was very sad to hear that she lost her life while she was helping people in their hard time. Whoever has done it.

1. Can't be a patriotic Pakistani

2. She spent 40 years of her life and she had never been attacked once even before which clearly reflect that there are foreign interference involved to assassinate her and to destroy the image of the country.

3. Due to large number of presence of UN-documented immigrants from neighboring country because of war of Afghanistan security measures are not satisfactory but at the same time people NATO forces presence angers the local people

RIP. it is really so sad. Non muslims should avoid muslims countries. Especially 100% muslims countries. They have a lot of extremists.

Missionaries are brave and foohardy to go to Muslim countries as most of them regard promoting other religions is an offence against Islam, punishable by death.

It is also foolish to say education and health are not political as for the Taleban and other extremists everything is political if it has a connection to the West

The "religion of peace" strikes again...
15:39 December 14, 2012 by bcterry
It's obvious why she was killed, she was a christian, and muslims killed her because of it.

It's the same reason christians are being slaughtered by muslims in damn near every muslim dominated country.

Hate, violence, and death, are the cornerstone of the (cough), "religion of peace".

Business as usual for islam and it's brainwashed.
