Blue-collar support for Sweden Democrats rises

Swedish blue-collar workers increasingly sympathize with the anti-immigration Sweden Democrat party, an opinion poll review showed on Friday.

Members of the unions within the Swedish Trade Union Confederation LO, the umbrella blue-collar union organization in Sweden, still in large part support the opposition left-of-centre Social Democrat party.

However, the Sweden Democrats have now surpassed the Moderate Party, which leads the current government coalition, to become the second most popular political party among LO members, a review of opinion polls ordered by Sveriges Television (SVT) showed.

"One in six LO members would vote for the Sweden Democrats if we went to the polls today," Sifo pollster Toivo Sjörén commented on the findings.

"Immigration has been in spotlight so we see increased Sweden Democrat support not only within LO but within other groups."

The review looked at opinion polls conducted in the autumn of 2012 and over the holiday season. About 4,800 people were surveyed.

And when, exactly, did immigrants and refugees manage to get mainstream 'blue collar' jobs in Sweden?

This is the result of The SD creating an issue and the mainstream political bodies not responding to it in time and not responding correctly.

The leaders of the LO, the Moderat, Social Democrats, etc, knew and know that the problems of immigration and high numbers of refugees are NOT the issues the SD puts forward. They do not take mainstream jobs - that is done by the owners of companies contracting work out to other countries. That is done by CEOs and Boards of Directors who must show a profit at all times.

Immigrants and refugees create wealth. They create jobs. They enrich their new societies immeasurably - England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Singapore all prove this beyond doubt and beyond question.

When small-minded, xenophobic bigots force immigrants and refugees out of the 'system', what else are they to do, but open restaurants, groceries, service companies and other businesses in the grey areas on the fringes of the economy?

They will reclaim those areas and make them 'mainstream'. they will become rich not by stealing Swedish jobs, but by creating their own opportunities.

That is how it works.

Not only the blue-collar, the foreigners too, and I'm one of them, so long live SD!

@ Rap43

"That is how it works"

Hardly. Way to victimize immigrants and hide their responsibilities. They should be held responsible just like any thinking individual. Or do you think less of immigrants? Sweden has a responsibility to offer immigrants every oppurtunity to integrate, but that`s where it`s responsibility ends. Immigrants need to integrate, the final responsibility lies with them. No matter how much Sweden spends there will never be an integrated society if the immigrants themselves don`t want to integrate.

RE "Immigrants and refugees create wealth. They create jobs. They enrich their new societies immeasurably - England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Singapore all prove this beyond doubt and beyond question."

If you notice the countries you listed are non-welfare states, hence you work or you live in squalor and barely get by. Sweden is MUCH different politically and culturally so the mass immigration into the countries you listed above creating wealth is not a model that will work for Sweden. You have to decide if you want a free market with the lack of welfare which encourages immigrants to work... or do you want a welfare state that encourages immigrants not to work. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

I could be wrong but statistics and history is on my side in this debate.

One would suspect that none of the commentators are "blue collar workers". They denigrate "blue collar workers" by suggesting that they are all subject to the latest propaganda from the SD or the Moderates or the Social Democrats and can't think for themselves. Many of these "blue collar workers" are on the front line losing their jobs. When large numbers of people enter the country with a different religion, different dress, demands that their religion be preferred over others and who receive public support while doing so, the "blue collar workers" are understandably concerned by what they see. Trying to change the story does not change the facts. Perhaps Rap43 could cite some figures showing that the immigrants about whom the most complaints arise have created "wealth". As for England, Canada and Australia, #5, you are incorrect instating they are "non-welfare states". One might add that the difference is they they are very much more selective in who they admit to their countries.

the issue here is that noone here differientiate between asylum seekrs and imigrants.

Imigrants need to provide for them selfs, asyulum seekers gets provided for the state.

@ demikze. You will sudenly realise u will be among the first to go wen they come to power. That is even if the heaquaters of the government is not moved to a strip night club. Read their manifesto my friend. The polish charge less and do better work.

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend", i'm sure you heard this before...right? When that happned, if the SD or anyone else for that matter choose to be our enemy then that can be arranged. But i'm sure they're smarter than that.
14:24 February 8, 2013 by prince T
SD is not smart at all and they do not know wat they are doing. Check many kommun in sweden. Most of SD Mps have resigned. There is no sd leader in Ulriceham at all now. Many have resigned other kommun bc they nothin to offer.

Pple like u forget to realise dat our volvo, saab and all our companies have have been taken over by foreigners. Blue collar jobs by polish osv.

SD thinks once immigrants and muslims are gone economy will get better. If that crap is your belief, i am not suprised dat u are non swede. Votin for SD will not make u a swede. Have u listened to Ekeroth lately.
15:03 February 8, 2013 by dekamikaze
Really, that's why their polls keep dropping right? Oh, but wait, where are they stand now in the polls, 10%, 12%? what was it last year, 5-6%, what happens they're doubling their nummers, shocking isn't it? And by next year it could get to 15-20% you can take that to the bank or bet you life on it, in many words you already did. This is the time of the right-wing now, the time of liberal BS is over...get it?

If you think you're smart, then talk facts don't BS ok? If they are not smart then who is, you? The politicians that imported you? Perhaps, deep down you know that you will never be accepted because of who and what you are...you know what i mean right? That's why you are so bitter about these SD people right my friend from the dark continent?

As for me, I don't want to be a swede, and don't pretend that i am, but i will vote for the SD nevertheless!

The working class is the one who usually ends up footing the bill for all these social experiments.
15:47 February 8, 2013 by godnatt
So, ACTUAL Swedes care about the fate of their country... That's good news.

The tipping point is here. SD is the third largest party in Sweden and will be gaining more momentum fast.

You can't fool all of the people all of the time...
15:56 February 8, 2013 by elina.stene
As some readers put it very correctly earlier, mass immigration is nothing more than a social experiment - and a failing one at that. And who is footing the bill for this? The Swedish taxpayers.

Whoever tried to claim that immigrants enrich societies and "create wealth" clearly has no idea what they are talking about. Immigrants do not "create" jobs, they take jobs. Or worse still, many immigrants come and get no job at all, instead they are provided for by the Swedish state. This is the case with asylum seekers. In a situation where there are already a lot of unemployed natives, to attempt to solve the unemployment issue by taking in more and more unemployed it completely retarded to say the least.

I am glad to see support for the SD is rising, but perhaps it is too little too late.
17:47 February 8, 2013 by Max Reaver
It's sad to see that none of the government party is doing the right thing, namely focusing on improving the lives of existing immigrants rather than mass-importing more. It's bad to give birth to too more kids than you can take care of and not giving them education etc. Similarly, the Swedish government lets too many refugees and asylum seekers in, while ignoring the issues that need to be resolved following the influx. Furthermore, the policy doesn't encourage educated people to become useful to the society. One example is the fact that master or PhD-graduates cannot stay in the country for too long after graduation to find a suitable job. Combined with difficulties of getting a suitable job at all for a foreigner, the scenario has proven to be nightmarish for many. I hoped that some more main-stream political party wouldve taken it up, and put forth civilized debates to work out the issue. If that is done then SD wouldnt have gained this much support as of today.
17:57 February 8, 2013 by prince T
U need all the luk u can get with sd. u. Let the facts speak at the next election. I expected u to disprove my facts but u still held on to your illogical view. I forgot to add dat half of mmy kommun sd ledamot in gotheng have gone. Pple will come around before d election.

I will not respond to u again. However i must say hat the poll for sd is rising but not according to wat we find on the street. I guess u are unemployed and immigrants took your job.
18:21 February 8, 2013 by icedearth
I am curious. What immigrants should do so they get accepted?

1-They try their best to find a job even less qualified ones . Locals say : they are not work

2-Miracle happens and the immigrant find work in his/her field..Locals say : immigrants taking our jobs.

3- Another miracle happens and the immigrant is working for less for a qualified job and Locals say : they are lowering the standards of living by taking low paid jobs.

4- The immigrant give up trying and runs his/her own business. Locals: They are changing the culture of the country. Add more stupid reasons.

So what makes locals happy?

Also, why attacking Muslim immigrants, when the webpage is vastly subscribed by English people whom whine and complain about life in Sweden and the difficulty of integration. Also, why commentator targeting Muslim immigrants, when Sweden is hosting Christians refugee mostly from the Middle East ( There are many youtube videos showing Iraqi Christians who do not want to integrate and just happy to live among their own iraqi fellow men.)
18:27 February 8, 2013 by ragdoll
Good for them. Immigration is a real issue and the main parties are pretending its not and it will go away. It won't. Either immigration will be addresssed or the one party with the balls to dicsuss it will grow and grow. This is what happens when career politicians spend all day discussing theory with each other on Gamla Stan instead of living in the society they are supposed to represent.
07:24 February 9, 2013 by prince T
Sweden host mostly muslim refugee from somalia, syria, iraq etc. Malmö is becoming a new middle east. The government should copy canada method on immigration. I saw an advert in GT yesterday of rector of First Learning project in England that S wants to adopt. She has a nigerian surname. We should admit pple dat will contribute and not the lazy and religious bigots.
04:09 February 11, 2013 by Biorealist
Non-western immigrants in Sweden do not integrate well. Their employment rate is about 50%, compared to 80% for native Swedes. They are extremely over-represented in crime and other social problems.

Sweden has the most pro-immigration public in Europe, but even Swedish opinion is on balance anti-immigration. And for sensible reasons - the evidence does not support large scale non-western immigration. It is clearly a harmful development. So why does it continue?
