Swedish 'cocaine king' jailed for 18 years

A 40-year-old man was sentenced on Friday to 18 years in prison after he was caught smuggling 1.4 tonnes of cocaine into Sweden as part of what has been labelled Sweden's "biggest ever" cocaine ring.

The cocaine, which had a street value of 4.5 billion kronor ($665 million), had been imported from Colombia.

The 40-year-old, Jonas Oredsson, is believed to be the mastermind behind the trafficking, but he is known to have had help from several people, including his mother.

The court settled on the lengthy penalty after taking the man's lengthy criminal record into account.

Another man, 56-year-old Mauritz Andersson, was sentenced to 14 years for his involvement. He confessed to the crime.

"I knew that I was engaged in smuggling, I even knew that it was narcotics," he said during interrogations, according to the Aftonbladet newspaper.

Andersson intends to appeals the verdict.

The crimes, which took place between 2006 and 2010, were uncovered during a record drug bust in June 2010 on a sailboat off Martinique when the 56-year-old sailor was arrested with a 1.4 tonne cargo of cocaine.

The two men were found guilty of attempted aggravated narcotics crimes. Their accomplices, a 30-year-old and a 33-year-old, were sentenced to prison for eight years.

The investigation has been ongoing for four years, and Swedish police have had help from police in the US, Colombia and France, as well as extensive cooperation with European Union agencies Eurojust and Europol.

Oredsson has a lengthy history of criminal activities, including several counts of bank robbery in eastern Sweden, one of which he took a cashier hostage.

He is also known for his escapes from authorities, once being taken by masked and gun wielding men from a correction centre, and once from a court by a man on a motorcycle after having just been sentenced to 12 years prison.

Oredsson's mother is charged with having hidden 26 million kronor in a foundation in Switzerland.

The criminal network is known to have spent 115 million kronor between 2007 and 2010, including the purchasing of houses and boats in up to five different countries.

Members of the group are also charged with money laundering in Spain.

Proof right here that the biggest criminals are not immigrants, especially not those from the EU, but others neither.

Immigrants are ruining Sweden. Yeah, right. A 100 berry pickers come in from Bulgaria and 2 other people from Romania are caught stealing a wallet and suddenly, they are everything that's wrong with this world.

Yet, here you have it. The biggest criminals in Sweden are none others than Swedes themselves. Make no mistake, such large cocaine trafficking brings forth all sorts of levels of hell, from torture to murder, rape and corruption.

I mean, $665, with his mother involved - really?

I'm sorry, but once you get caught holding a hostage during a bank robbery, you forfeit your right to freedom FOREVER. Why was this guy even back on the streets after that?
15:39 March 8, 2013 by Mikersson
18 years for the master head is not enough considering the proportions of the crime.

I think Swedish laws are quite protective.

A criminal got caught and they are IMMIGRANT. Swedes come out of the dark. Got caught big time.. doing big time in jail... Swedes hidding.

WHY?

Maybe Swedes are too perfect to talk about themselves.

Fact. The majority of serious criminals, such as murderers, bank robbers and rapists, in Swedish prisons are people born outside of Sweden. Ethic Swedes having no foreign born parent represent only the tiny fraction of the prison population. Most over-represented in serious crime statistics are men born in Africa and the Middle East. For example, almost all gang rapes are perpetrated by men from these regions, and all 41 assault rapes in in Oslo, Norway, were committed by non western immigrants.
18:56 March 8, 2013 by Khazara
redblue where are your statistics. It is know that Swedes (white people) regularly hide their misdeed. Most crimes committed in Sweden are by white people.

18 years - he didn't kill anyone

and

nobody is or was forced to use cocaine.

Like most western countries cocaine is available to those chose to use it. It is not obvious that objectively cocaine imposes any more costs on society than tobacco or alcohol.

Legalise most drugs, tax the untaxed and free the police to address some real problems.

I can't comment on the reasons for why minorities are over represent in the Swedish prison system, but the reason why they are overrepresented in UK prisons is because they are far more likely to sentenced to terms in prison for minor crimes than ethnic English. A good example is the case of a teenage Muslim girl who served (if memory serves me correctly) almost two years in prison for downloading a bomb making manual, at about the same time a right wing nationalist was also caught with the exact same document and he freely admitted his intent to kill Muslims, he was given a suspended sentence?????

What a load of racist crap. Racism goes 2 ways but only one is accepted. I have seen so much racism against whites but nobody caresabout it so stop your pathetic accusations as racism is not born within a person it is how foreigners react that creates tension.

The man that received 18 years. I hope he rots in hell

And your paranoiac ranting and raving is based on which hard fact?
14:01 March 9, 2013 by pcs
I once heard a work colleague say " all foreigners are drug dealers" another said to him "Yeah right, all white people are big time smugglers and chemist who make the stuff" . (Touché)

So, the moral of the story is, not only about supply and demand but, one big time Charlie taken out of his exclusive gated mansion to live a life of luxury behind bars.

So the moral of the story is, not only about supply and demand but, one big time Charlie taken out of his exclusive gated mansion to live a life of luxury behind bars. Oh and less funding for a certain political party!!

This one case is proof of what? That Swedes are worse and "bigger" criminals then immigrants? What a joke. You are going to base your opinion of crime in Sweden one this one case? Laughable.

Immigrant crimes in Sweden is hardly only "stealing a wallet". Immigrants are overrepresented when it comes to murder, assult, rape and robbery. The major felonies.

"Yet, here you have it. The biggest criminals in Sweden are none others than Swedes themselves." Liar. The biggest criminals in Sweden comes from everywhere. Sweden, The EU and outside the EU. Considering the numbers of immigrants in Sweden compaired to ethnic Swedes it`s obvious that immigrants are represented amongst Swedens biggest criminals.

@Khazara

"It is know that Swedes (white people) regularly hide their misdeed." Know by who? Based on what facts?
