Harem pants are back. Back? OK, they were called MC Hammer pants in the 1980s but the form has not changed that much. The legs, from the knees down, are fitted while the crotch area is loose and baggy as if it were cut to be a skirt. In other words, they are some kind of mixture between skinny jeans and baggy pants.

Many women in Sweden already own a pair of harem pants although they are not particularly flattering as they make people look smaller and bigger. Of course, “flattering” is a subjective term, which is always connected to a certain beauty ideal.
Anyway, Swedish Glamour offers some insights into H&M’s spring/summer 2010 men’s collection including harem pants. The readers reacted very differently to this trend. Some of them were intrigued by the idea and some of them thought that the pants were incredibly ugly.
So far I can’t say that I would be happy if my boyfriend wore harem pants. On the other hand, it is great that H&M’s designer thought more out of the box this time when it comes to menswear. My male friends often complain that H&M’s menswear is very boring while girls can easily find some cool, modern and cheap clothes.
I’m excited if the collection will become a success or not. In general, it includes many interesting pieces such as kilts or colourful hats.

One part of 80’s fashion that should not have been revived.

Finally, some people are awake now. Men’s dressing is changing. Since years there were nothing happen, super-boring. And not only a change in kind of pants, men are going to dress in skirts. I just can hope that some men will take advantage to go skirted; but not all men because that would be resulting in the same it was for a long time: stereotyped dressing.
A skirt has elegance, and hopefully designers will find enough possibilities to create different styles of skirts for men, too.

Are women the ‘new man’? It looks like that men can’t follow the new trend to be manly through pants, the sign of power and strength. Is that the reason that women using more pants than skirts? But what could be the reason that female still against skirted men?
The root of this problem is the fact that we associate power and pants with men, therefore, if a woman weilds power and wears pants, she’s often accused of being some man-creature who doesn’t know how to be feminine. The only way seems to use femiine clothes (by the way skirts were always unisex throughout the history). A modern women doesn’t care who is wearing skirts and dresses just focused on their own life, feel happy and knowing that the gender revolution has brought many changes. One of this change are skirted men, men which were forgotten for a half of century completely.
I think it is overdue that men have to learn to use their feminine site more to be real men. That includes going more in real men clothes, the skirt or dress which is the biological correct wardrobe for men thinking of his body.

Chris, I can’t see that women are against skirted men. Main problem is that men don’t know that skirt is better for us, so don’t try it. I don’t agree men have to be more feminine, is a Scot in kilt feminine? As You said, skirts are unisex, and better for our health than trousers. There is a huge propability that trousers are increasing a risk of prostate diseases like cancer and benign (I ‘ve described mechanism in other Forum). Also skirt is much more comfortable than trousers. Thus society have to be informed that wearing skirt instead trousers isn’t “feminine”, it’s return to the roots.

Strikemaster, I learned the power of skirts for man. No, men do not have to be more feminine, just showing their site which is in every man, too. That’s not negative it’s just the reality.
Yes, the society have to be informed – but we’re the society, too.
In case some women don’t like skirted men I can tell you that I am speaking for myself. Using skirts as everyday wardrobe some elderly ladies at my workplace complained that they have to look more for a “perfect” outfit because of “that male competitor” and they went with a proposal to the boss. Boss’ comment: “Everybody is free in our country”.

Ridiculous! Women or girls? In trousers? You must be mad! They would look absurd! Or they did to some of society’s least able creatures who started howling foul when females started wearing them!
Thankfully not everyone is quite so challenged in the wit department, and to those more able members of society today, I say Good, because to say anything else would be not only be absurdly sexist and extremely unfair, but also very stupid indeed! Men have for millennia, worn skirts and dresses, they are the oldest garments on the planet, and infact it is only in the last 90 odd years that boys stopped wearing skirts and dresses identical to those worn by girls today! So go for it, The industrial revolution is over, and we no longer need to spend our pittance on hard wearing industrial clothing, there are as many men in light work as women and there is no reason on earth why they should not be enjoying the freedom to be got wearing skirts or dresses again, As for our more challenged creatures,,,, well they will just need to live with their limitations, and be encouraged to mind their own business!!

Chris, we are only small and well informed part of our societies. As I said, there must be strong activity on the forums to show people there are men who want to wear skirts (or wear these already) and to explain the reasons we’re going that way.

I also read there’s no skirts in the H&M collection, garment shown above and called ‘kilt’ is a skort with many buttons to make it unpractical and is currently almost out of stock in the USA. Thus it seems to be a sabotage against men’s skirts. So if You want to wear a skirt, buy an utility kilt or skirt from women’s department.

There will be men’s skirts only in some H&M stores, in so called ‘trend-stores’
available in March 2010.
Some answers to comments above: Arrow, you are right, but one problem might be that people tend to run with herd. All what could be different MUST be uwrong.
Chris: I think the ‘power of skirt’ is nothing else than have ‘culture’ and tradition, pants doesn’t. Skirts are variable in millions of styled combinations, pants………? Some women just don’t know how to handle this new fashion-sstyle. On the other hand, I don’t think so that men should listen to that because I never heard comments or even bad voices when women extending their wardrobe with originally men’s ’stuff’. Did you?
strikemaster: You are also right, skirted men usually more and better informed, and it is no wonder that a lot of skirted men’s you find also in professions like physicians, lawyer’s teacher’s. How come?

Yes, indeed a question why men with high education prefer skirts. Aother point of view is that some women posting about men’s wardrobe. But whats about men, they never say anything about women’s dressing. All is fine?
I don’t think so, men’s clothes does not affect women, so they should just support men, like men doing it with women – nothing more.

Mara, telling a woman what she ought to wear is a sexism (in opposition to telling a man what he must wear – it’s standard human behavior in our society). It’s very good example to show what the word discrimination means.

being a man i have worn skirts most of my life. a lot of times in secret because of the ramification from both sex’s. Last year ‘09, has been a turning point where i had worn a skirt several times and a lot a little giggles and behind the back phrases were said. It was blamed on the fact that it was a denim mini skirt. but it fit and wore well with a cotton button shirt to match.
If men are to wear skirts then the shoe companies had get busy quickly. mens tennis shoes will clash with a lot of womens fashions and men do have big feet

I think many people are still living by the scripture that says: (paraphrase) Men shall not wear what pertaineth to a woman, and a woman shall not wear what pertaineth to a man. Which of course is very good, no crossdressing.
Ok, wait for it……
There’s nothing wrong with a man wearing a skirt that’s made for a “man” to wear, the only problem with that is, there’s been no company that’s been willing to make skirts for men. Their “excuse” is that there’s no market for it, Yeah, Right! Talk about conformacy! Even wearing a kilt gets a man some wierd looks, still, I got a kilt coming to me, and I can’t wait to wear it and mess conformacy up!
Oh, did I mention I want one of these skirts, um, where do I get one?

Men’s skirts day – 15th May. It’s time to try a skirt and discover the comfort of skirts. IMO this Day is a good oppotrunity for men to try it without any suspicions, so have a good time wearing kilts or any other kirted garment.

I think it’s time to de-sexualize clothes which went just one way in past. Skirts and dresses shouldn’t be excluded anymore. We are talking about a dressing style, and it is a piece of clothes – and we are not ashamed to make the biggest deal out of that.
I know we can re-educate some people, so let’s go over it and dress with whatever people like. There are so many possibilities when skirts and dresses included in men’s dressing choice to look fancy, causal, or whatever people like.
Let us go in that direction that everybody should be able to dress she/he like(s) and lets get over stereotyped and uniformed dressing.

So, Martinus, let desexualisation begins.
I’m waiting to see a massive demand through Internet, a lot of websites describing reasons why men should wear skirts, next TV shows will appear.
But firts we have to do something- we must separate our demand from fashion trends. Otherwise it propably won’t catch on because men don’t want to follow trends, don’t know what is going on there and don’t want to know. We have stronger arguments for skirts than some designer’s craze.

As many know, fashion is a form of art, art a form of symbolism, and symbolism a means of expression. These are all inter-related facets and fundamental to one another. Much of this, in the end, is rooted in tradition, as tradition is another means of expression and symbolism.
