Storm-hit foresters to get 2 billion kronor

Foresters hit by the storm that struck southern Sweden in January are to receive financial compensation. The government, along with coalition partners the Left and Green parties have agreed to award a total of two billion kronor.

75 million cubic metres of forestry was ruined, equivalent to an entire annual harvest. Foresters will receive a tax reduction based on the amount of storm-damaged wood cleared away.

The storm was the most violent to strike Sweden since 1969, killing seven people and leaving 359,000 households without electricity. Many people had to wait weeks before they were reconnected.
