Website combats Sweden's "growing psychological problems"

A new Swedish web service has been launched to help the growing number of people in Sweden with psychological problems. At first the website will only cover patients in the Stockholm area, but if the project is a success, the organisers hope to roll it out nationwide. The website, the Psychological Health Information Register, www.phir.se, will provide advice and information about support centres and point people in the right direction.

Although it is aimed at the general public, its organisers hope that it will also serve health workers, institutions, and voluntary organisations, at a time when more and more people are being diagnosed with psychological problems.

"Psychological ill health is growing in Sweden and there is a great need to find information fast. I hope that the new website will contribute to people finding help quicker", says Katarina Tjust Häggström, Operations manager with the National Helpline for people in acute psychological crisis, one of the partners in the project.

"On the website people will be able to describe their situation and what kind of help they are looking for. The site meets a need for finding everything presented together in one place," adds Häggström.

The site is funded with money from the National Heritage Fund, and it is run by the Swedish Association for Psychological Health together with the National Helpline.

The site includes a search engine to help people source treatment centres, telephone support systems, self help organisations, links to other internet resources as well as tips about projects that the regional authorities and other public institutions offer the general public.
