About 50,000 tests are carried out by employers each year and traces of drugs are found in almost 2.5% of cases.

Usually it is new employees and people who are suspected drug abuse who are tested. But 23 of the top 100 firms also do unannounced checks among their staff, according to a survey carried out on behalf of the Karolinska University Hospital.

Three years ago only three companies carried out spot-checks.
