Luxury Mercedes seized from wife of Ferrari smash Swede
Police in Beverly Hills said on Tuesday they had seized a 400,000-dollar Mercedes Benz sports car from the wife of a Swede whose one-million-dollar Ferrari was written off in a crash last month.
Officers in the ritzy Los Angeles district said they impounded the British-registered Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren driven by Nicole Persson, 33, the wife of former games mogul Stefan Eriksson, after questions arose over its ownership.
"In a follow-up with Scotland Yard, we learned it may have been in fact improperly exported from the country," said Lieutenant Mitch McCann of the Beverly Hills Police Department. "It had problems with ownership."
Los Angeles county sheriffs said that an unidentified financial institution had claimed to own the Mercedes, while another financial institution in Scotland claims to be the owner of the totalled Ferrari.
The seizure of the luxury sports car came after Eriksson's rare Ferrari Enzo, only 399 of which were ever made, was reduced to scrap in a mysterious high-speed crash in Los Angeles on February 21st.
At the time, Eriksson said he had been a passenger in the car and that the driver had fled, but officers said later that Eriksson may have been the at the wheel.
No charges have however been filed following the crash that police had initially said took place during a high-speed road race.
Eriksson was once a British-based executive of the video game industry firm Gizmondo Europe but resigned last October after a Swedish newspaper reported that he had served five years in jail in the early 1990s for alleged involvement with a Swedish mafia outfit. Gizmondo Europe later declared bankruptcy.
