Reporter who hugged Finnish president ticked off
A Swedish TV news reporter has been ticked off by an official watchdog for hugging the president of Finland and calling her "Finland's Moomin Mama" in a report following Tarja Halonen's victory in January's presidential election.
Hasse Sven, a journalist on SVT's Rapport news programme, congratulated Halonen on her win in a manner that could be seen as biased, the Broadcasting Commission ruled. It is unsuitable to hug a politician on camera, it said.
The report broke SVT's duty to be impartial, but not to the extent that it broke the terms of the company's broadcasting license.
In a decision released at the same time the commission exonerated a drama-documentary about a controversial murder trial in the 1980s.
The programme , Styckmordet - berättelse om en rättsskandal (tale of a legal scandal), did take sides the commission argued, but its point of view was well trailed beforehand and its content was discussed in the studio debate that followed. The programme therefore did not break rules on impartiality.
