Search for Västerås bike attacker

A recent spate of attacks on women in Västerås, west of Stockholm, are probably the work of one man, police in the town say.

At least six women have been attacked by a man on a bicycle since August 19th, said Tommy Kämpe of Västerås police. The attacks, which took place at night, are being treated as attempted rape, he said.

During the attacks the man has torn at the women's clothes, hit and kicked them, and in one case exposed himself, tabloids report. He has in all cases fled when the women fought against him.

Another woman was attacked in the town on Saturday night, but police have been cautious to link that incident to the other attacks, saying that certain details seem to differ, including that the man in the latest attack did not have a bike.

Police say they are looking for a man between 20 and 30, with dark hair, who is between 170 and 180 centimetres tall.

A man was recently arrested and charged over similar offences committed on the outskirts of the town. Police initially believed that he could be the man they were looking for, but the attacks continued after the arrest and the women who say they were attacked by the 'bike man' did not identify the arrested man in identity parades.
