A Swedish court on Saturday detained a man accused of stalking European 100-metre hurdles champion Susanna Kallur, Sweden's TT news agency said.

The 26-year-old Frenchman, who lives near the central city of Lyon, is suspected of assaulting a doorman at a local indoor hall where Kallur practiced last week, it said.

During interrogation with police in central Sweden, the man, who appeared confused during his questioning, said he is in love with the Swedish athletics star and had decided to stay in Sweden until he could get in touch with her.

He had been arrested last week for assaulting a nine-year-old in the hall where Kallur practiced. After being released he returned to the centre where he assaulted the doorman, TT said.
