"We are classifying this as murder," said Skåne police spokesman Charley Nilsson.

The incident also left a 23 year old man with gunshot wounds in his arm.

Just before 5pm police and emergency services were alerted to the incident by numerous callers who had heard shots on Södergatan.

"We still don't know how many shots there were, but we have information that several were fired, And we have not established whether the shooting happened indoors or out on the street," said Nilsson.

Both men were taken to hospital by ambulance. The man who was killed had still not been identified on Sunday evening. The 23 year old man who was injured was expected to be questioned by police about the incident.

"He is not seriously injured," said Charley Nilsson.

Whether or not the two men were firing at each other has not yet been confirmed.

"We don't know that right now," said Nilsson.
