A man is believed to have tried to abduct a 10-year-old girl as she waited to be taken to school in south-central Sweden on Wednesday.

The girl was waiting by the side of the road in Götene, near Lidköping, about 130 kilometres north-east of Gothenburg, when the man pulled up in a dark-coloured Saab. He first exposed himself to the girl, then tried to force her into the car.

"He failed to carry this out and the girl ran home," said police inspector Anders Svensson.

The girls' parents could see the car remained in the same position for a short while after the girl struggled free.

Police say that the girl has given a description of the man, but they are not going public with details of his appearance or age.

"Somebody whom she regards as old might not seem old to us, so it would be silly to lock ourselves into a position," he said.

The incident is being treated as attempted kidnapping, according to local paper Nya Lidköpings-Tidningen.
