The fire brigade was alerted to the blaze, at Brunflo sports ground near Östersund, north-western Sweden, at 9pm on Saturday. The fire had started in a changing room. By the time the fire brigade arrived at the scene, flames were visible from the building. Crews from four fire stations were called in to fight the blaze.

It later emerged that fires had started in a number of spots around the sports club, before spreading to the swimming pool building.

"We are not ruling out the possibility that the fire was started deliberately," a spokesman for Jämtland Police told TT.

Fire crews tried to save the pool building, but were forced to give up due to the strength of the fire. They then turned their attention to a nearby community building, which according to information on Sunday morning had survived the fire.

An adjacent ice rink building survived due to favourable winds. The fire was completely extinguished by about 7:30am on Sunday.
