A 27-year-old man has been sentenced by Vänersborg District Court to one year in prison after he spiked his girlfriend's food with abortion pills. The man hoped to terminate his girlfriend's pregnancy without her prior knowledge.

Before the events that led to his conviction, the man and his girlfriend had been an item for eight years, four of which were spent living together.

When he found out that his girlfriend was pregnant the man managed to get his hands on prescription abortion pills. He then mixed three of the pills in with her food.

Having completed her meal, the woman became nauseous, began bleeding and was close to having a miscarriage.

In addition to his jail term, the man has also been ordered to pay his former girlfriend 80,000 kronor ($11,000) in damages.
