A dog has died a macabre death in western Sweden after it was tied to the tow hitch of its owner's car and dragged five kilometres along the road.

The owner hung the leash over the hook before going around to scrape ice off the front windscreen early on Monday morning. But as he drove away, he somehow forgot that his pet remained tethered to the vehicle, Borås Tidning reports.

It was not until he looked in his rear view mirror that he realized his awful mistake. He immediately stopped the car and took the dog to a veterinary hospital in Borås. But by the time he got there the animal was dead.

Staff at the hospital have reported the owner to the authorities for cruelty to animals.
