A family had a lucky escape on Tuesday night after being run over in a hit-and-run incident in central Stockholm.

The family – a woman, a man and a baby – was run over by a driver on Vasagatan in the city centre. The woman sustained minor injuries, while the man and baby were unhurt.

”It was a miracle that the baby survived. The pram was reduced to crumbs,” said a police spokesman.

The incident occurred at 1.13am outside the Cityterminalen bus station. The family was taken to the Karolinska University Hospital where the woman was treated for fractures. The baby was taken to the Astrid Lindgren Children’s Hospital, where doctors said it was unhurt.

Police believe that the car involved in the incident had previously been stopped by officers on nearby Västmannagatan, but they had lost contact with it.

The car was later found in Sundbyberg, a suburb of the capital. Police with dogs were searching for the driver during the night.
