A 31-year-old Thai man, Akkaradej 'Chon' Tankae, was sentenced on Monday to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of Swedish tourist Hanna Bäcklund on a beach in Phuket, Thailand in March.

26-year-old Hanna Bäcklund from Umeå in northern Sweden was staying on the popular Thai tourist island of Phuket with a friend when she was brutally stabbed to death in broad daylight by Chon on Mai Khao Beach on March 15th.

Chon was arrested a couple of days after the murder and he immediately admitted to murdering the woman.

The judge at Phuket Provincial Court said that the penalty had been commuted from death to life imprisonment because Chon had made a full confession, according to local newspaper the Phuket Gazette.

The judge added in his closing comments that the murder of the 26-year-old Swede had had a negative impact on the island's tourist industry.
