Swedish telecommunications equipment provider Ericsson said on Thursday that it had signed a contract to set up and operate an international mobile phone network for British group Cable&Wireless.

Ericsson, contacted by AFP, declined to state the size of the contract beyond saying that it was big.

Ericsson, the biggest provider of telecom networks in the world, said it would manage the C&W mobile phone network for five years.

The network, based on the GSM standard mobile communications system, would cover Europe, Asia and the United States and would enable fixed-line and mobile communications to be carried through one handset.
