A 79-year-old man was assaulted by a burglar early on Sunday morning in the town of Åmål in central Sweden.

At about four o'clock in the morning, the man and his wife heard sounds from the cellar of their house

They initially thought the noises might be from a passing storm, but when the husband went to investigate after a time, he was assaulted and knocked down by a burglar who had broken into the cellar.

He was later taken to hospital.

It was still unclear late on Sunday morning whether any serious damage had been done.
