Jumbo jet hostel prepares for take off

Travellers passing through Stockholm's Arlanda airport will soon be able to reserve a place on a different sort of plane as the world’s first jumbo jet hostel prepares to take its maiden bookings this Wednesday.

Hotelier Oscar Diös has spent the last four months gutting and refurbishing a wrecked 1976 Boeing 747-200 and transforming it into Hostel Jumbo.

“I'm really excited about the opening. It feels like it's really good, really well built,” Diös told The Local

The hostel has 85 beds and 25 rooms, ranging from the exclusive 'cockpit suite' to four person dorms with shared bathrooms.

The jumbo jet's last flight was for Transjet, a company that went bankrupt in 2002, leaving the plane up for grabs. Diös wasted no time before making his move.

"We were looking for expansion from our existing Uppsala hotel and we needed something at the airport. We found the plane, which was pretty much abandoned by this stage. It was great, as it combined our need for airport accommodation with that of finding a use for the plane," said Diös.

Hostel Jumbo aims to offer budget accommodation close to the airport with prices starting from €35 to €40 ($46 approx) for a bed in a four person dorm, or €135 for a three person room.

Booking lines will open on Wednesday and the first guests will be bedding down on board from January 15th.

Even travellers not planning to stay overnight are welcome to climb aboard, as Hostel Jumbo will also feature a café with 24 hour service and a walkway allowing visitors to admire the view of Arlanda airport from the massive wing of a jumbo jet.
