A 34-year-old illegal taxi operator has been charged in Malmö on eight counts of rape and attempted rape.

The charge sheet presented at Malmö district court on Friday included one count of aggravated rape, five counts of rape, and two counts of attempted rape.

The suspect is believed to have sexually assaulted a number of women after luring them into his car on the pretext of offering them a lift home at attractive rates. The attacks took place over a period spanning January 2007 to July 2009.

Prosecutor David Ludvigsson said there was strong evidence tying the suspect to the crimes.

"There's DNA evidence in five of the counts. We also have forensic evidence and witnesses in a number of cases," he told newspaper Aftonbladet.

The 34-year-old was arrested in September and has been held in custody since October 2nd.

The trial is scheduled to begin in February.
