Many Stockholm residents started their Midsummer's Eve celebrations without power as up to 70,000 customers of energy utility Fortum suffered a power cut during the night and Friday morning.

Those affected by the power cut were concentrated on Djurgården, Hjorthagen, Gärdet, Norra Djurgården, Norrmalm, Vasastaden and Östermalm.

Fortum has advised that by 5am the problems had been resolved for majority of the affected Stockholm residents. The company explained that the fault was due to a technical issue in the 220 kilovolt network by Skanstull in the south-central part of the city.

According to Fortum's webpage the fault affected 64,730 customers.
