“This means a significant step forward for us, which we appreciate hugely,” said the newly appointed ambassador, Hala Husni Fariz, to news agency TT.

Bildt received the new ambassador on Thursday, making her the first Palestinian representative to be formally welcomed at a ceremony at the foreign ministry.

Fariz, born in 1955, is the highest ranking Palestinian representative in Sweden since the delegation arrived earlier this year.

According to Fariz, the Swedish government has been an important aid giver in the development of the Palestinian state and institutions as well as having made a clear stand on wanting a peaceful and fair two-state solution in the region.

”This is the climax of a long relationship with the Swedish government and we appreciate the support and help that we have received,” she said to TT.

According to a statement from the foreign ministry the upgrade of the Palestinian representation follows ”great advances made in the development of the Palestinian state”.

”It is now important that the parties resume negotiations leading to a two-state solution and the creation of a democratic and sustainable Palestinian state, side by side in peace and security with Israel,” said Bildt after the meeting with the new ambassador.

In two weeks the UN general assembly will gather in New York and the Palestinians are anticipated to demand independence through the representation of president Mahmoud Abbas.

If the question is raised on the security council, the US is expected to veto the demand.

Fariz did not want to comment on what the new status of the Palestinian representation in Sweden will mean to the UN process.

”It is, of course, up to Sweden to make their own decision,” she said to TT.

Spokesperson on foreign policy for the Liberal party, Fredrik Malm, said on Thursday that he regrets Bildt's decision to upgrade the Palestinian representation in Sweden.

”It is regrettable that Carl Bildt has made this decision and it is unfortunate that it happens just at the time when the UN is set to discuss the recognition of the Palestinian state,” he said to TT on Thursday.

According to Malm, Sweden should take a more balanced stance in the Middle Eastern conflict and work for a two-state solution and a peaceful settlement of affairs.

Malm also says that the decision has been taken by Bildt without consulting the other government parties.

”Not that I am aware of anyway. I just found out,” he told TT.

Story continues below…

The spokesperson for foreign policy for the Christian Democrats, Désirée Pethrus, is also surprised.

“I am surprised that the decision for the change comes now when the issue is such a hot potato in the UN,” she told TT.

According to Fariz, however, the timing for the upgrade has nothing to do with the closeness to the UN talks.

“We were informed of this step a few months ago,” she said to TT.

Foreign Minister CB is shaking the tree too prematurely. It spoils the fun of Christmas and Santa in the snow- show. Time, sir, is just a mean machine.
18:45 September 8, 2011 by saab
So, is the "ambassador" representing Fatah or Hamas?

Can Ms. Fariz go to Gaza and not get thrown off the roof of a building?

Does she recognize Israel as the Jewish state or does she advocate a one-state solution?

Does Bilt make sure that she is not wearing a suicide belt?
19:12 September 8, 2011 by Prat
Nice progress.

Alternately, to downgrade the Israeli Ambassador would be less welcome.
19:24 September 8, 2011 by Uncle
Ahh, who cares? Let them declare independence, have ambassadors and play a country.

Israel in it's turn should treat the new neighbour as an enemy foreign country, meaning disconnect electricity and water supply, as well as canalization. Close the borders to workers.

Also, each and every missile shot should be seen as a foreign aggression and should be answered with 10 times the force without any concern to citizens (as they do).

Let Europe pay for this useless piece of... that cannot produce anything, but terror.
19:44 September 8, 2011 by saab
Yes, Uncle, if they want a country they can have it but then a missile is an Official Act of War and let them suffer the consequences. Still, it is so very odd. You have Hamas in Gaza and Fatah in the West Bank and they hate each other and are not geographically contiguous. Gaza-stan... despite open border with Egypt and Fatah despite a lot of foreign aid (US, Europe) do not a country make.

just an agreement by both sides can solve the problems,we need direct talk

Wonderful news! Sometimes the right can do things that make sense, too. :)

For an israeli, you are awfully naive. Not so long a go I have read an interview with a romanian ex-securitate Ion Mihai Pacepa. He claimed to be involved in ideological preparation of Arafat and palestinian government.

According to him, USSR felt that it needs to create a fierce natural enemy to the US, since it did not actually believe to win in a conventional war. It wanted to use the easily inflamed muslim world to create a good anti-US force and the first target was Israel (as a front base of USA).

USSR paid for translating and distributing "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" in the entire arab world. After that, a work was done to present US as ruled solely by Jews.

As for Arafat, his extreme ideas were rejected as an acceptable way to undermine Israel. It was forbidden to Arafat to mention the size of Israel (in fact statistically, most arab children draw a map, where Israel is the size of Saudi Arabia) and that it surrounded by enemies.

To suppress Israel he was allowed to talk ONLY about palestinians as a suppressed minority, where in fact in all the documentation of Israel's enemies, a "successful" outcome of war with Israel would mean a territorial division of it between mostly Jordan and Syria. Only a little cute lamb form could actually make the west support them and accept terror as a form of freedom fighting.

It is impossible to reasonably talk with them about rejecting the idea of returning refugees. They will continue attacking you with the reasoning of the refugee issue, as well as water issue, as well as Jerusalem issue etc.

Not one muslim country would agree to giving up on the above, since it would mean in effect the end of war with Israel, whereas the only concern of muslims is to eliminate this country physically in the full meaning of the word. It is impossible to negotiate something there. The conflict is not between Israel and Palestinians, but between USA and muslims (who took the place of USSR).
21:48 September 8, 2011 by Iraniboy
Nice move!

It is ridicolous to to ask for direct talk as a prerequisite for statehood! A direct talk is needed between two countries to end a war and agree on peace but existance of another country cannot be discussed with the enemy! This is a ridicolous demand by some EU and US countries. The borders are already defined lonf time ago!
22:13 September 8, 2011 by guliver

As long as Hamas rejected our right to exsist, and Fatah says is not going to recognize the Jewish state ,it is diffuclt to come to direct talks,

But the truth must be said on 29.11,47 we accepted the decision 181 th on the division of Palestine to 2 states: a Jewish one and an Arab one ,Ben Gurion accepted it ,also in Oslo agreement we accepted that principe,it is also true that our sociaty is today divided on this Thema, those who accept the Idea of 2 states living side by side in peace and the right wing parties who are against it.

I personaly think that it is not good for our democracy to rule the Palestinians who are the majority in the occupied territories since 1967, we must seek a solution in which both people who got different culture and history will live side by side in peace, and that include giving back territories for real peace

Of course a solution which call for the elimination of Israel ,as it come from Iran ,Hamas and other will not bring us to true solution

I like Blidt.. Carry on.. At least, some right minded people are still out there..
22:19 September 8, 2011 by johnoleson
Who in their right mind thinks this is a wonderful move? Who represents the people of Sweden? Do the people of Sweden endorse sending money to Hamas(previous article)? Does this represent what Sweden wants?
22:43 September 8, 2011 by Uncle

I don't think you understand. The main theme of muslims is to take the knife out of muslim body (Israel). It blames EVERYTHING on it as all their dictatorships, economic failure, terror, bad health, internal fights are seen as a symptom of that knife that is stuck in their body. You do not talk to palestinians. They are oppressed in Lebanon and Egypt, however there is no talk of their independence.

You talk to those who want to eliminate Jews as people inside Middle East.

Foreign minister of Bahrain proposed to return everything to the Jews who were kicked out of the arab countries, in order to EMPTY Israel and then take over it. There are constant plans on removing the "tumour". Jews are attacked everywhere by muslims, because muslims genuinely believe that Jews have a mutual plan to harm Islam, with a base of operations in US and front in Israel. These nazis actually believe everything Guebbels propagated. As you know, they seriously connect Jews to Israel, even if some were never there, or do not support it at all.

Remember a tortured jewish guy Ilan Halimi in France? His murderers actually believed that if he is a Jew, his family MUST be rich. Did you read a testimony of Wafa Sultan in Geert Wilders trial? She said that murder of a Jew is taught in the schools in this SECULAR country. " If I then, as an 8-year-old girl, was asked 'what do you prefer, candy or kill a Jew',I would have replied 'kill a Jew'"

All of this is a clear view of what is planned for Israel. Of course there should be 2 countries, since Israel is not just to their own people, by feeding palestinians. However, it should accept that no peace is possible, as long Jews are not muslims. By definition. And act accordingly. I would hang it on the UN to keep peace there and if does not, burn it to the ground every time there is an attack on Jewish state.
23:01 September 8, 2011 by ajs42548
THe problem is that the Palestinians will only accept a one state solution. They have said so repeatedly and it's in their charter. Why are some people confused about this?
23:56 September 8, 2011 by saab
While BIldt is at it, let's invite "ambassadors" from the Basque region, Aceh in Indonesia, "Spanish Sahara" in Morocco, Chechnya, Puerto Rico, and all the other places where there is a nationalist movement. The ETA would be quite appreciative as would the Chechnyans so heck, if you want a country, engage in a bombing campaign against innocent civilians and then present your most Western looking person to Mr. Bildt and BOOM!!, you have ambassadorial status in Stockholm and your very own "country". Neat formula.
09:18 September 9, 2011 by Learner2011

I don't know you and I don't wanna know you. Based on your comments (Specifically #4), I can conclusively say that you are a very bad person by all means and you are one of the worst human beings I ever heard of.

It is really so sad that a beautiful country like Sweden and great people like Swedes have cancer elements like yourself.
09:39 September 9, 2011 by Iraniboy
I think Folkpartiet has fully shown their hypocrisy in their so-called liberal values. Now they demand peace that has faild over a half century prior to very first basic human needs of having a nationality, police, fod, health.

Well done Moderaterna though!

Your analogy is irralavant. Basque and other sepratist groups are as the yare called sepratists. They belong to a country but now they want to be seperated. Palestine has never belonged to Israel. Even if they want to it is impossbile as long as Isreal defined itself as a Jewish state. The borders beween Israel and Palestine is already defined. This is an issue of occupation not seperation. It is more of Southmapton being occupied by France and France and UK kill each other and some foriegn politicians like Folkpartiet call on UK and France to reach a peace deal instead of telling France to withdraw from the UK!!!

Well we can argue if this is a good move or not. But what is most interesting is the high-handed way Bildt acts. He is totally out of control and even his own colleagues have no idea of what he is up to. Important decisions like this one should be discussed properly and definitely not be made by one single person.
10:35 September 9, 2011 by cowboykodp

There must be a psychological problem there with you man.

Now you're arguing with this wonderful Gulliver, who is Israeli.

Issues buddy?

I guess Gulliver is the one who has to suffer the consequences of chicken hawks like you and all the extremists on both sides.

Why can't Israelis and Palestinians get along? Who says they can't. They are the same people, that's why they call each other cousin.

I can't wait until the day they make peace and all these nay sayers are proven wrong.
10:44 September 9, 2011 by Tysknaden
@Lars J: Not to forget his strange comments on this butcher from Libya. Bildt has to become removed from his position. He brings shame on himself and the country he represents.
10:48 September 9, 2011 by guliver

As far as I know our leaders from left and right wing parties are not naive in what concerne to the exsistence of Israel, therefore by now we could not reach an agreement.

Still in 1943 Haj Amin El Husseini the Mufti of Jerusalem met with Hitler on the issue how to eliminate the Jews of Palestine ,

When Ben Gurion declared our Independence he said:'' now we are going to have 10 years fight with the arabs untill they will recognize our right to exsist" he was right ,meanwhile 63 years passed and Eygpt and Jordan arrived to the conclusion that wars will not resolve nothing, many other arab countries specialy in the Persian Golf do have secret contacts with us

they will come out with formal reations as soon as the palestinian problem will come to end

This is a new low.

sweden has nothing to do with the palestinian problem.those who installed Israel on the palestinian lands should solve the problem : GB-USA-France and all those who had something to be blamed for after what they did to "God's chosen people"
15:30 September 9, 2011 by Uncle

Oh, I am sorry, I forgot to get cowboys approval in regards to whom can I argue with... My bad. Would be of course good if you could also read whatever I argue about, but it is not necessary... For sure the history of minorities in the muslim countries shows quite well how muslims will live in peace and love with the Jews.

"those who installed Israel on the palestinian lands should solve the problem"

or those who invented non-existing until the 70's palestinians on Israels territory should solve the palestinian problem. How about that?
16:18 September 9, 2011 by guliver

the zionist movment started allready in 1882 ,the goal was to end the suffer of the Jewish people in exile and it was far away from 1933,allready on that time initiated the immigration from Europe to Palestine , purchesd lands which were bought by Keren Kaymet and Keren Haysod ,so Tel Aviv was build allready in 1922 and many other villages in Palestine, the European Governments did not help that proccess and Britain who controlled Palestine tried to avoid it and limited the immigration certificates to the Jews,in 1947 were in Palestine 600000 of Jews and circa 500000 Palestinians both wanted an Indipendent state just the Palestinian wanted it +wanted the Jews out .and a day after the vote in the UN on 29.11.47 on the division of Palestine in 2 states an Arab one and a Jewish one broke the first war our Independence war

Its official, Swedes are Anti-Semites and support terrorism.

According to your foreign minister.

Well done, what a diplomatic triumph for Sweden !

Perhaps you can now get on with importing more Muslims and expelling the few Jews that are left.

Cuckoo, Cuckoo !

Its a good job Hiedi was not a Jew.

Nearly everyone talks about "the Occupied Territories" of the West Bank and Gaza,. I suggest that those who do see "Youtube", "Israel Palestinian Conflict: the Truth about the West Bank". "Disputed", not "occupied" is the legally correct definition about the West bank.

So Carl Bildt what is the quid pro quo? This was a decision made in Washington not in Stockholm!
23:52 September 9, 2011 by Tysknaden
No, Sigmund. Nej. The other children do not want to play with you. At least not me. If I want to feel important, I will have to do something else. Something useful. Something healthy. Playing with hate and death is not my plan.
01:22 September 10, 2011 by Uncle

You see? Look at the above. Everyone who doubts a state (or an organization) that produced LITERALLY nothing, but death, is a hate and death lover. They use slogans you see?

Palestinians accept 0 Jews on their land, while Jews have 20% arabs and the protectors of palestinians use the word "apartheid" against Jews. They love to compare the wall that stops suicide bombers to the Berlin wall that stopped refugees from the East Berlin.

They use the word of love, while protecting the bullies who target solely civilians. They use the words of freedom for a nation that executes homosexuals on the streets. Don't you see the code words?

To compare, go to any North Korean site, where the eternal love to the great leader and happiness of people who actually starve and sit in concentration camps is described with utmost literacy.

Go back a little and read the excited European praise to the "new African leader" Robert Mugabe, who opposes "racism", "apartheid", "poverty" and "inequality". The quotes I used, since Mugabe in fact introduced all the four behaviours above with much more violence, determination and lawlessness than the British whites ever dreamed of.

Read how European socialists wrote about "love" and "peace" anticipating the arrival of a new state called Zimbabwe. Take a look how quiet they are now about this statistically worst country in the world with no currency, 0 GDP and total starvation (FYI, we are talking about once richest country in Africa, which currency exchange was 1:1 against British pound in the 1970's).

Just read and you will understand which neighbour Israel will get and awfully quiet will europeans become, when israelis in Tel-Aviv and Haifa will sit in bomb shelters as a common routine of their month, as southern Israel already does. They will surely invent a reason for THAT as well.

imnokuffar: I couldn't have said it any better. Bildt was not "built" for the position that he's in. He is terribly naive and incompetent.
10:08 September 10, 2011 by guliver

I do agree it is not easy ,I'm living in south Israel not far away from Beer Sheva ,last month I spent almost every second day in the shelter together with my son and my wife, we must hope for a better future to our children, believe me I was tank commander in 1973 and fought in Beirurt on 1982,

The arab world started to understand just now after 63 years what does it mean democracy and good social life ,the young generations travelled to America and Europe and came with other views, but still in the arab countries there are the extremists the muslem brotherhood, the Hamas who want to have a country like Iran.

Believe me from right wing to the left wing here every body wants to have a peace, the 1 million dollar question is how to achieve it,

On one thing all of us agree :we shell never give up our right to exsist as a Jewish state, saying that we must act to renforce the moderate arabs who seek to live with us in peace, there are such people they are not many for now but they will be in future

And I wish you a nice weekend

Look at the "peace" with Egyptians. It is reflected wonderfully in your embassy in Cairo today. Just a taste of a future peace with palestinians, who hate Israel and Jews 100 times more...

Good luck

13:45 September 10, 2011 by guliver

Yes ,that is what I said before the arab countries are developed countries, in Eygpt

there are young people who want to live in peace and want a prosperity, specialy those who studied and live abroad,in the western countries, but the other part still believe in the muslem brotherhood and want a country after the model of Iran, those were the people who attacked our Embassy, but also when Mubark was President there was much anti semitism in Eygpt in all the media.

Besides now the Egyptians close eyes on smugling weapons from Sinai to Gaza, therefore I passed many days in the shelter with my family last month.

The question is what will decide the Eygptian people ,if we will go back to Nasser days,it will bring certainly to a new war and we will have to occupy Sinai and Gaza strip for the 4th time...if they choose the good guys who want a western democracy the peace will be kept,

That is the problem by making peace with the arabs-you make peace with a dictator,a leader who controll the country by force, once that dictator is out ,also the agreements are out because the people do not respect them any more
17:18 September 10, 2011 by Iraniboy
Isreal seeks nothing short of totall occupation of Palestinen that's why they never accept peace with Palestine. According to wikileaks, Palestinians authorities wanted to give up all occupied lands and limit the right of Palestinians tp return but Isreal rebuffed. So cleraly Isrealis want more than current occupation! What is very suprising is that Israelis fail to understand that this way is not sustainable! They are risking for getting more while while they may lose what they have now!
18:41 September 10, 2011 by guliver

I'm sorry but I do not agree with your statements above.

On camp david Barak and Arafat have allready reached an agreement, the practical disscussions went on in Eilat with Yossi Sarid who was a Minister in the Labour party, the plane was withdrown of Israel from territories occupied in 1967, other territories exchange, and withdrown from the Muslem parts of Jerusalem keeping the Jewish sites like the Jewish Quartier and the walling wall.

Barak offered a withdrown program after the Israeli -Eygptians peace treay,in gradual steps,Arafat rejected it and wantedit to be immediatly ,besides he addressed the right of return of all Palestinians to Israel, Barak offered return just to the Palestinian state, then Arafat broke the talks, and opened the first Intifada,Clinton said afterwards:"the Palestinian did 2 big mistakes on 29.11.47 by rejecting the UN decision number 181 on the division of Palestine, the second made by Arafat by rejecting the camp david offer.

Yes Iraniboy in peace treaty both parties have to give part of their wishes and accept an intermediate solution

@ Uncle, Sig and guliver

If you guys haven't heard of that, that's your problem but the facts are there. Read Haaretz more often! Palestine wanted to give up nrealy all their rights for current occupied territories and right of return for Palestinians but Israel rejected. I can't imagine any better for Israel unless they seek total annihilation of Palestine. I'm sorry but you guys are supporting a very dangerous fascist state that systematically differentiates its citizens based on their race Arab/Non-Arab. It is sad to say that this path will only blur the future of Jews in Israel. Occupation, apartheid and dictatorship are unsustainable. If only those leaders in Israel, Iran and remaining dictators in the Middle East could understand that!

You can deny the existence of state of Palestine on papers but you can't deny the existence of Palestinians unless you have massacred all of them as Nazis did to Jews in WW2. In fact there are millions of people who have no attribution than being Palestinian and many of them were living in an area where you call it now Israel but they cannot go there anymore!

Your "Palestinians" should go home - to Syria and Jordania.
00:35 September 11, 2011 by johnoleson

I quote you on #44: "According to wikileaks, Palestinians authorities wanted to give up all occupied lands and limit the right of Palestinians tp return but Isreal rebuffed."

This is a lie. The point you try to make is but for a moment until someone bothers to check, only to find you have fabricated it. Are all your opinions based on lies?
09:54 September 11, 2011 by Iraniboy

It is not my Palestinians. These are humans whose basic rights are denied by people like you. Syria and Jordan is as much home for them as South Africa for you.

I provided a link to Haaretz for everyone reading these posts to prove my point and to refute Uncle's slander and accusation of lying. But now you repeat it! If it makes you feel better go on but I post it with more details now!

Haaretz http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/palestinians-agreed-to-cede-nearly-all-jewish-areas-of-east-jerusalem-1.338785

"Palestinian negotiators secretly agreed to accept Israel's annexation of all but one of the neighborhoods, Har Homa, built in East Jerusalem.

Further details reveal a Palestinian agreement to the return of only 100,000 Palestinian refugees into Israel, and that Erekat agreed to the Israeli demand of recognizing Israel as a Jewish state.

Israeli leaders, backed by the U.S. government, said the offers were inadequate."

It is so sad that these staunch Isreali supporters have read this news! Like I said before if Israel rejected this offer, it shows they look for nothing short if total annihilation of Palestine. As a result it is up to us to refer to first moral standards to see how we should react to this issue.
11:41 September 11, 2011 by Uncle

"Read Haaretz more often! Palestine wanted to give up nrealy all their rights for current occupied territories and right of return for Palestinians but Israel rejected."

"Palestinian negotiators secretly agreed to concede almost all Jewish areas of East Jerusalem to Israel, the Guardian newspaper and Al-Jazeera TV reported on Saturday. As many as 1,600 Palestinian documents on peace talks with Israel, obtained by Al Jazeera TV and given to the Guardian"

Oh, AL Jazeera provided documents to Guardian? WOW this is a trustworthy source! Amazing proof! Just by typing in Google "Al Jazeera false reports" gives 11 MILLION hits. Somehow, WIkileaks is public information available for download, but it was only Al Jazeera who found them secret documents. SO secret that only Al Jazeera had an access to it.

Actually, it was not Wikikealks, right iraniboy? You first read Al Jazeera got a false impression that it was Wikileaks and then hysterically tried to find a source other than the famous arab news source.

But oh, yeah, "many documents were authenticated by the Guardian..." how many? which officials? Who in the Guardian? Authenticated how exactly? Got another copy from the same source? I would say, a palestinian source? That is also trustworthy. Palestinians are famous for "pallywood". (Also google what it means).

Now, if East Jerusalem is "all their rights for current occupied territories ", then the problem is SOLVED, iraniboy. Them bad dictators in Israel misread the map. The problem is Jerusalem ONLY! I am impressed with the deep research, iraniboy.
18:49 September 11, 2011 by guliver

That is exactly the trouble with you,you do not accept our right to exsist as a Jewish state ,you want to cancel Israel and instead create PALESTINE, from such point can no dialogue developed you go on with the same mantra of faschism , apharteid ecc.

And by the way we read 2 different journal , I read Ydehot Aharonot and you read Ahaarez.

what make you think that the information in Haaretz is right and in Yedihot Aharonot is wrong,do you know besides Hebrew so well that you can read the difference?

By the way 90 percent of Israelies read Yediot Aharonot which give the exact information

Solution: one secular democratic state (like South Africa) with a constitution that recognizes the legitimacy of both peoples' claims. Then all the money now being spent on war and hatred could be spent on greasing the wheels of peace with employment, education, etc. Arab elites and Muslin fanatics would have to find a new cause to distract the Arab public and the US would have to find itself another imperial proxy in the region.
03:52 September 12, 2011 by johnoleson
South Africa may have sound laws and policies but the reality is it is so full of governmental corruption the laws are unenforceable. High crime and the 17 major tribal groups vote as a block not as a democracy. The result is a barely functioning government with those who can leaving.
