Sweden braces for family immigration boom

The main reason behind the expected increase is a recent verdict in the Migration Court of Appeal (Migrationsöverdomstolen) which is set to make it easier to seek a residence permit for people from countries where it is difficult to produce valid identification documents.

The larger part of the rise in applications is expected to come from Somalia.

Two years ago, two precendential verdicts from the court had demanded tighter controls on ID papers for those seeking residency permits on the grounds of having relatives in Sweden.

This hit Somali applicants the hardest as there are no official authorities in Somalia to issue the kind of identification papers which could be recognized by Swedish authorities.

But in January this year, the court loosened regulations. The verdict means that if someone can confirm consanguinity through DNA-testing, there is no need to affirm the applicants' identity in any other way.

The Migration Board is therefore expecting a surge in applications from Somalia.

“Legally the verdict will increase the chances of close family members to be reunited,” said Jonas Lindgren of the agency to TT.

According to the Migration Board, there was already a large backlog of applicants who had been turned down when the court had asked for national ID papers. The rise is expected to come from Somali applicants.

“We have started to look at that group but the verdict will probably affect applicants from Afghanistan as well,” said Lindgren.

Story continues below…

However, Lindgren is confident that the agency can cope with the rise in applications, with some help from the government.

“There is already long waiting times and there are many open cases that we are working on completing. We have therefore turned to the government and said that we are counting on needing an extra 100 million kronor ($15 million),” said Lindgren.

At this rate if I was a white Swedish person I would be trying to get out of the country like white in South Africa. Wake up Sweden!!
12:30 February 23, 2012 by Terri85
Time to return back to US. What the hell is this country thinking?
12:51 February 23, 2012 by Kaethar
People only reading the headlines as usual. In fact this makes perfect sense. Contrary to popular belief Somali immigration to Sweden was in fact extremely restricted due to the fact that Swedish authorities didn't recognise Somali passports. Proving descent from DNA testing is a full-proof system - one which should have been used earlier since it's far more reliable than documentation (even from "valid" states). For all we know this could lead to a decrease in family immigration if it turns out people have lied about having relations to others to gain them residency.

Sounds of floodgates creaking open.....Think of all those lovely pirates you will be sheltering, not forgetting the tribal mentality they will be bringing with them. You need to elect some new politicians fast.
12:56 February 23, 2012 by dizzy09
yet again Sweden is failing to attract the right kind of immigrants...its amazing asylum seekers are having an easy ride settling in Sweden while the same opportunity is virtually impossible for university graduates.
13:15 February 23, 2012 by JohnAndersson
I am very happy to welcome new neighbours and friends to Sweden!
13:17 February 23, 2012 by star10
It is very stupid of Sweden's government not to allow university graduate stay in Sweden and seek job here. These are well-educated, motivated, working-age and dynamic people. Not only them, but their kids in the future are also likely to be more educated ones with useful return to the society. But Sweden keeps on importing illiterate immigrants. I myself am a student in Stockholm with a high skill upon finishing my study. And I like Sweden and would have liked to stay here. But I will have to get job within a very short period of time. I have many highly educated friends who left Sweden simply because of the visa restrictions. I wish I could do something to change this rule for I really like Sweden to benefit from it. Otherwise, those with high quality education can make it anyway for themselves.
13:41 February 23, 2012 by AmericanSwede16
I just read yesterday that a record amount of Swedes LEFT the country in 2011. 51,000+.

The Swedes are moving out and the Immigrants are moving in. Doesn't look like Sweden has a great future ahead.
13:43 February 23, 2012 by wolverine2k
wo wo.. this is another sad news for Sweden. I think the state should first solve all problems related to refugee immigration rather than importing more refugees.
14:03 February 23, 2012 by Andrew
I really do not understand. For me, moving to sweden working full time permanently in Sweden, I have to renew my residence and work permit every 2 years. Paying taxes like all others do. But yet, instead of getting PR, they are giving away PR to asylum seekers and geting welfare from the government using taxes we are paying.

Strange ideas the government has. Can they consider me as asylum seekers instead?
14:22 February 23, 2012 by Terri85
Andrew try to burn all your documents and go to migration center. Believe me it will work. Oh yeh, there is a requirement you mustn't work, but sit on the government's neck. Can you?
14:47 February 23, 2012 by godnatt
Importing wild jackals from Africa and releasing them onto the street would be more likely to produce productive citizens than overwhelming the government dole with more illiterate Somali knuckle draggers and terrorists.

In other news, honor killings, clitoral mutilations and terrorist plots up 45%
14:57 February 23, 2012 by umeåstar
What a JOKE. Sorry but Sweden needs to learn from the UK. You take in 2 many cry babies and your country will go down the toilet. How about they work on educating the ones who are already here and fixing unemployment. Stop showin off to the EU already!
15:09 February 23, 2012 by bourgeoisieboheme
YES!!! More people with no education or language skills to mob the social system. The first post was correct, this is how South Africa started by importing immigrants to fill the jobs. Difference was SA needed people to fill these jobs (labor, mining, etc.), chances are the people coming to Sweden will never work.
15:11 February 23, 2012 by Jamshidtash
sure, the easiest way is marriage or sambo :))

You can visit russian speakers forum (www.sweden4rus.nu) and see how many people offering sambo for $$$.

Hope there will remain some Swedish people in Sweden untill the end of 2012 :))
15:15 February 23, 2012 by lokalkille

Do you know the background of the 'Swedes' that left? I bet a lot are 'Swedes' of foreign backgrounds who find it difficult to get 'proper' jobs in Sweden.
15:34 February 23, 2012 by djmarko
Before people start jumping on the bandwagon, why not think for a moment why the government are keen to allow more people in? has anyone ever done any research as to why they want to make it easier for people to move to Sweden? Why did they have to use Somalia as an example?? The report reads '' The larger part of the rise in applications is expected to come from Somalia'' I think this is misleading and it leads to a backlash from Swedes, I do agree that highly skilled people should be first on the list to get jobs and migrant status or at least the types Sweden wants to attract, maybe the government are aware that there is an ageing population, they might really need more people for the future but they really need to do more than just allow immigrants to come to Sweden and leave them to their own devices, its so hard to get jobs, everyone complains, the last thing the government needs is creating more low income areas as this will lead to more social issue already be seen in parts of Sweden, instead of people just ranting blindly, maybe they need to investigate deeply why the government has taken up this position, they might uncover a few things or 2, I believe this is the case!!
16:08 February 23, 2012 by Terri85
@Djmarko Sweden do need more population as Canada. But what does Canada do. Organizes exams in other countries (dont know exactly what kind of). And the other requirement is you should have high education and plus work experience. If you met all these requirements then welcome to live there. I have even seen ads about this in US.

It is unfortunate that people dont understand what humanity means. The somalis live in the worst hostile camp in kenya where life is horrible. You guys talking nonsense just go to these camps and experience what life is . There are some somalis who are hardworking. They need a place to motivate their skills.
16:46 February 23, 2012 by tgolan
the problem isn't white vs Black, it is that some immigrants , like from Somalia have a hard time integrating in Sweden and a hard time getting jobs, this will just inflame the situation
17:42 February 23, 2012 by Kublai
How nice. Now can Muhammad Al-Shabab reunite with his family and clan and they can all get apartments in Borlange which seems to be the somali choice of town in Sweden. I feel truly priviliged when I go to work early in the morning, knowing that all the hours I put in at work really counts for something, knowing that now some somali families can sleep peacefully and don't have to worry about anything, their children and elderly are cared for and their men don't have to exhaust themselves with hard work anymore. We are truly blessed in Sweden who get to care for all these somali's, afghan's and iraqi's. They are so thankful for what we do for them and show us respect in return. And think of all new tradecrafts they bring to Sweden. Like bombmaking skills, stonethrowing, genital mutilation, how-to-hi-jack-a-boat etc. And finally we are getting some high standing culture to our barbaric country. We are so priviliged.
18:49 February 23, 2012 by hackie
Sweden is the only country that prefers to import illiterates that rely 100% on social welfare while ignoring the educated university graduates that contribute to the economy. What a shame!! Sweden better learns from Canada and Australia.
18:57 February 23, 2012 by lapua338
The last thing this country needs is more frickin' immigrants! Particularly those who do not and/or refuse to integrate. We cannot exist together without conflict.

The government has lost control over our borders during the past fifteen or so years. This has resulted in immigration on a scale that is placing huge strain on our public services, housing, environment, society and quality of life.
19:03 February 23, 2012 by calebian22
Look at the problem with Somali immigrants in Minnesota, US. Just say no Sweden, to importing these worthless sheep herders who believe in the Koran but can't read it in any language.
19:15 February 23, 2012 by RobinHood

It is a pleasure to read that these people will "motivate their skills" in Sweden. What skills did you have in mind? As far as I am aware, Sweden has no vacancies for goat husbandry, and the piracy industry has been somewhat slack since the Vikings retired.
19:21 February 23, 2012 by Gjeebes
Sweden should really wake up from the nightmare it is, and has, been creating for how many years now? It will be an interesting place in 5-10 years at the rate things are going. Let's bring in more illiterate goat herders from country X, since they seem to assimilate so well, especially in parts of Stockholm and Malmö. It seems time and time again, Swedes make a move to do something based on emotion, rather than reality, or common sense. They sure do pay a fine price to pretend to be the saviours of the wrong done, the underdogs. Probably the biggest problem is the Swedish arrogance regarding their perceived superiority over other nations, and their self-advertised (oh ya, a big customer of one of the largest American PR companies) model nation-ness. Gimme a break! But don't worry, when they realise they can't afford to educate their own (you would not believe the poor level of education at these publicly funded Uni's), not to mention those who do not even recognise or value a Western education (not that this is even available here), they will just raise taxes. I say, why not raise the surprisingly low bar found in Sweden, rather than continuing a losing battle pretending to save the world's less fortunate. Too many things need to be "brought up to standard" in this mixed up country. Geesh!

Don't understand the policy in sweden. There are thousands graduate students from all over the world every year. Lots of them want to work in sweden but they can't. Government are kicking them out of sweden but accept more refugees. I really don't understand.........
22:08 February 23, 2012 by mcarroll1
You already have a problem with immigrants in Sweden this is just adding fuel to the fire. I dont understand the immigration policy.EU educated immigrants cannot get a job or any support to set up here while immigrants from outside the EU get all the support they need. Crazy.

well I can not understand Swedish government policies that if you are wild African donkey then you are welcome but if you are educated Swedish university graduate then no place in Sweden.
01:13 February 24, 2012 by TheWatchman
Almost every single person in this comment section has a brain. Your politicians do not. How did they think granting citizenship to violent terrorists, criminals, wife-beaters, gangsters, welfare-takers and drug dealers while forcing university students to leave the country was a good idea?

That's just as stupid as selling your car because your tires are flat. I don't even understand it.

As usual imperialist UK and USA reap the benefits in Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan leaving Sweden the goose to pick up the dregs!

Answer: An imposed "globalization" and "multiculturalism" in the goose countries with the aims to make profits in human slavery trafficking, ambitious multibillion oil and gas business to serve the greedy needs of some popular British and American "individuals"!

Norway is secured. Wake up Sweden or you gonna be dependent and humiliated by the British hocus pocus in the end !

Sweden was once the land of Vikings. They would never have allowed these "refugees" in. I grew up in South Africa. We opened our borders in 1994 with disastrous consequences- we now have Nigerian drug lords, Czech criminals, Somali traders, Zimbabwean refugees, Mozambican housebreakers- and the locals hate them as they try to take away jobs, customers, and hit on local women. Four years ago, all hell broke lose here in South Africa, and the locals burnt foreigners alive!. It's gonna happen again. Sweden should learn from South Africa's mistakes. Why does such a great nation- once one of the most powerful in all of Europe allow itself to be degraded in this manner. These Somalis will NEVER integrate, trust me - I've seen it all. In Britain, where my family comes from, demographers predict that the English will become an ethnic minority in their own country by 2060! Maybe King Gustaf II Adolf needs to re-incarnate and sort out the mess. He can start by getting rid of those pathetic Swedish politicians who first destroyed the independence and authority of the Swedish monarchy in 1974, and are now hell bent on destroying the country. Dr. Neil MacGregor, PhD, told me the Swedes and Danes are among the most genetically intelligent nations on Earth. The question is will the Swedish nation still exist in one hundred years from now??
21:36 February 24, 2012 by ramshead
It is with deep sorrow to read that Sweden is opening the flood gates of Muslim immigrates as it wont be long before the death knell will be rung for Swedish culture. I can not understand your government representatives can be so blind to the fact of the Muslims taking over your beautiful country. They demand and get special privileges that others can not obtain. In St Paul, Minnesota, the majorite of cab drivers are Muslim Somalias who refuses to take a fare with a dog even a service dog and they will refuse a fare if they may have a bottle of wine or beer, opened or not, citing it is against their religion and they get away with it. If that is not already happening in Sweden, it won't be long before it starts.
22:58 February 24, 2012 by mafketis
Dear Sweden,

You seem to be confused, please remember the following:

1. Somalia has far more dysfunction than you could ever hope to fix with mush-headed multi-cultural tolerance and generous welfare benefits.

2. The more you try to help (in the form of accepting refugees with virtually no hope of becoming productive citizens) the less good you actually accomplish.

3. You're hurting existent citizens who should be your first concern.

4. If you want to help Somalia ..... don't. They like their religion and culture just fine and don't think they need to change and will bring their culture of mayhem and violence to Sweden.

A concerned friend

@mafketis A known fact about Islam and Moslems is when they flee the horror Kleptocracy they create. They then start recreating the horror they created and fled from.

The ONLY Nations that mistakenly welcome Moslem refugees have a Christian History not a Sharia history.Effectively saved by Sweden Legally defined God, the Christian God Lord Jesus Christ (Sweden's constitutional Monarchy legally ans only defines our Christian God! Not "Allah" a pagan moongod idol, The place of worship *if* one wishes to use it, is a Christian Church. Stop the tax bonus to those that do not accept the Holy Trinity which is what makes a religion no others)

The biggest "industry" Moslems have is the famine and refugee industry. The reality is the only way to help Moslem's is watch them die. Not import the horror they represent here

The Moslems that are already here are Schizophrenics, they need therapy Not confirmation of their delusions!

Sorry Sweden, but if you look at Trilateral.org, they have an interesting article called " Europes response to the arab awakening" that states the elites have plans to incorporate north Africa into the EU.

You know...

I have no problem with foreigners, but there are just too many immigrating to Sweden!

We need to tighten our borders, not make it even easier for immigrants to come here.

There are plenty of other places and countries to go to.

Very, very bad move Sweden. Canada is moving away from the "family class" immigrant in favour of skilled or business class immigrants who actually will have something to contribute. Sweden seems to be stepping in the other direction.

This news is going to please no-one.

06:04 March 3, 2012 by Camlon
I am sorry Swedes, but I love these kind of news.

What I have realized is that when Sweden goes haywire and not even Swedes can hide that their country is getting destroyed by too liberal immigration laws.

Then other countries will take notice, and stop using immigration as a welfare program.
04:43 May 11, 2012 by ultra_materialist
Sorry Sweden, but prepare to have a giant rise in rape against the native population.

The people from outside represent 48% of all rapes... Soon they will be at 60%.

Sweden = land of cowards
16:16 July 27, 2012 by javamann
You need very few immigrants.

If you have dirty jobs that no one wants, the answer is to increase the pay and improve the conditions until the vacancies are filled; not to import whole families of foreigners to do them.

They will soon chuck it in and go on welfare.

Sweden worried that it has, like many western countries and Japan, an aging population, has decided that the answer is to vote for national extinction!
