Police received reports of several shots being fired on Önskevädersgatan in Gothenburg's Biskopsgården district, located on the western side of the city.

"We heard five, six shots fired. When I looked outside I saw two guys running off," one witness told the Aftonbladet newspaper.

Police arrived on the scene to find a young man who had been shot dead.

The victim, a man in his early twenties, was known to police from previous run-ins with the law.

Police have interviewed several witnesses to the shooting and two people have been detained for further questioning.

However, police won't yet divulge if the two being questioned are formally suspected in the shooting.

"I can't say anything more right now," Gothenburg police spokesperson Björ Blixter told the Göteborgs-Posten (GP) newspaper around 8am on Thursday morning.

In the meantime, police have launched a preliminary investigation into suspected murder and continue to carry out a forensic investigation of the crime scene.
