Police have launched a murder investigation after one man was found dead and a woman found in a critical condition in southern Sweden on Sunday night.

Early on Sunday evening, police were called out to a residential area in Nässjö, southern Sweden, after they were tipped off that someone was acting strangely in the area.

At a nearby home, officers found a dead man and a woman in a critical condition. She was rushed to hospital.

While police are not revealing any information about the crime other than that a weapon was used, a source to the Aftonbladet newspaper revealed the victims were shot.

Police immediately launched a murder and attempted murder investigation, setting up a search party in the area complete with sniffer dogs.

"We have a lot of resources and are carrying out a forensic investigation, we're questioning people who may have seen or heard something related to the case," Mikael Leifefors of the local police told the Expressen newspaper.

"We're interested in hearing from anyone who has made any observations in the area. If so, please ring 114 14."
