Man, 23, jailed for raping 92-year-old woman
A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to prison for five years and six months for raping a 92-year-old woman on Christmas Eve last year.
The attack took place on Christmas Eve in the woman's home in Skaraborg County, western Sweden. The man attempted to initiate intercourse with the elderly woman by assaulting and threatening her, but she managed to lock herself in the bathroom, at which point the man left the premises. He returned soon after, however, and found the woman alone in her bedroom. He then raped her in "a particularly reckless manner", according to the prosecution. The 23-year-old was arrested soon after and charged with, among other things, aggravated rape. He was subsequently referred for a psychiatric assessment after which it was concluded that the man was not suffering from any serious mental disorder at the time of the rape. According to media reports at the time the man was previously detained in November in Gävle in eastern Sweden on suspicion of a separate rape offence.
