1. The Bridge bus tour

Fan of dark Scandinavian television show The Bridge? With a third instalment of the series on the way shortly, why not revisit some of the bleak and beautiful spots where the first two seasons of the Swedish-Danish drama were shot. Your bus tour guide will also share facts and anecdotes about the filming of the show and explain some of the history behind set locations in Malmö, Sweden, and Copenhagen, Denmark. Tours take place in English and Swedish and last 2.5 hours.

2. The historic pub crawl

Step back in time and taste your way through Swedish history by sampling everything from mead to microbrews. Set up by a US immigrant and her Swedish husband, Stockholm's Historic Pub Crawl has been running since last year and takes place on Thursday and Saturday evenings throughout the year. Those who sign up are offered a different drink at every spot and some quick lessons on drinking habits from Viking times right through to the present day.

3. The creepy taxi ride

New for summer 2015, Taxi Stockholm is offering a unique glimpse of real-life Swedish crime history. From the comfort of a taxi cab you're treated to the slightly ghoulish experience of tracking the last movements of some of the victims of Stockholm’s most shocking crimes, including the murder of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme in the city centre and the killing of Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh at one of Sweden's glitziest stores. Tour guides for this trip are virtual, you'll be given an iPad fitted with GPS positioning and offering videos and text to accompany your journey.

4. The wild wolf howling adventure

Sweden boasts a range of wildlife tours where you can spot elk, beavers and birds in their natural habitats. If you're looking for something even more dramatic, summer is the perfect time to camp outdoors, track wolves and hear the animals screaming outside your tent in the early hours. Run in cooperation with the Scandinavian Wolf project based at Grimsö Wildlife Research Station in central Sweden, Wild Sweden offers forest tours that allow visitors to sleep in tents in prime wolf territory. They're not cheap, but could just leave you howling with delight.

5. The Millennium walk

Based on the books by Sweden's most famous author Stieg Larsson, this tour takes visitors to the scenes of some of the most memorable locations in the Millennium trilogy: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the Girl who Played with Fire and The Girl who Kicked the Hornets' Nest. You'll head past Lisbeth Salander's apartment, see where Mikael Blomqvist lived and even get the chance to grab a coffee from one of the cafes featured in the series. The two-hour walk was recently rated the top literary tour in the world by Lonely Planet.
