Before you panic buy SAD lamps and wool jumpers, here’s a cheering thought. Colder weather and shorter days means cosy evenings at home, and that means curling up with something good to watch.

Presenting The Local’s top recommendations for sports fans, movie buffs, and series fanatics to binge-watch this fall. And luckily you can get them all on-demand in Sweden - thanks to our friends at streaming service Viaplay.

Sports

1. NFL from September 7th

The 98th National Football League season gets underway with the defending Super Bowl LI champion New England Patriots hosting the Kansas City Chiefs. Each of the league’s 32 teams play a 16-game schedule with one bye week - and with Viaplay you can catch the game live or up to 48 hours after it’s aired (Viaplay airs approximately 7 games per week).

The season kicked off on Thursday, September 7th, so clear your Monday night schedule for the next 17 weeks to keep up with the bone-crushing hits and spectacular catches.

2. Champions League group stage from September 12th

The 2017-2018 Champions League group stage kicks off on September 12th, with 32 of Europe’s top teams competing for the 16 places in the knockout phase. Watch some of world’s greatest stars go head to head, and ensure you have mid-week excitement to look forward to on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

All matches are available to stream live and on-demand with Viaplay Sport or Total. And with apps for Smart TV, tablets and smartphones you can catch the games wherever you are (and up to 48 hours afterwards).

3. NHL from October 4th

The puck drops for the National Hockey League’s historic 100th season on October 4th with the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins squaring off at home against the St. Louis Blues.

There’s nothing like watching the top ice hockey league in the world -- which features almost 100 Swedes, such as Washington Capitals center Niklas Bäckström or Detroit Red Wings winger Henrik Zetterberg.

And this year, two regular season NHL games will be played here in Stockholm!

The Colorado Avalanche and the Ottawa Senators will face off at the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm on November 10th and 11th -- the first NHL game to be held outside North America in six years.

But don’t worry if you can’t make the games in person. They’ll all be live streamed on Viaplay, or you can catch them for up to 48 hours afterwards. What’s more -- when you watch on-demand you can skip all ad breaks, so you can fit the whole game into an hour-long lunch break!

Movies

4. Doctor Strange

Benedict Cumberbatch switches from surgeon to sorcerer in Marvel’s mind-bending Doctor Strange. After a career-ending car crash, the eponymous Stephen Strange learns the mystic arts and prepares to overcome a powerful nemesis.

It’s chock-full of impressive CGI with pitch-perfect performances by Cumberbatch and supporting stars Tilda Swinton and Rachel McAdams. Ideal for a night in when you need to escape the real world.

Once you’re done, you can watch Captain America and Iron Man face off in another Marvel movie available on Viaplay - Captain America: Civil War.

5. The Twilight Saga

Got a day or two spare? Get your teeth into some serious Edward and Bella action.

The movie adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s series of vampire books star Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner -- and are bloody addictive. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

All five Twilight movies are available to stream on Viaplay. You can get them as part of the Total package that includes sports, or for just 99 kronor a month you can get a bundle that includes series and movies.

6. Star Wars Rogue One

The first of the standalone Star Wars films, Rogue One sees an unlikely group of rebel heroes team up to steal the plans for the Death Star. But will they succeed? If you’ve seen the other Star Wars movies you might think you know the answer, but better make sure by watching just in case.

7. The Jungle Book

Disney’s recent live action revival of its 1967 animation has actually been praised as one of the first remakes to improve on its predecessors. Quite the claim! But not unfounded, it really is very entertaining -- for adults and children. We dare you to resist singing along to Christopher Walken’s King Louie singing I Wanna Be Like You.

8. Far From the Madding Crowd

Based on Thomas Hardy’s timeless novel with a star-studded cast including Carey Mulligan, Michael Sheen, and Juno Temple, Far From the Madding Crowd is the definitive cosy day classic.

Perfect for fans of period dramas like Downton Abbey and Pride and Prejudice, Mulligan’s Bathsheba battles the age old dilemma: which of her three dashing suitors should she choose?

9. Carol

The critics adored Carol, and it’s no wonder Cate Blanchett’s performance earned her an Oscar nomination. The movie has been tastefully adapted from its source material, and there’s intense chemistry between Blanchett and co-star Rooney Mara that really brings the adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel to life.

TV series

13. Will & Grace

Lawyer Will and his best friend, interior designer Grace, live together in a New York City apartment. He’s gay, she’s straight, and there’s a supporting cast of outrageous characters -- it’s no wonder it became a cult show when it was released in the late-nineties.

Will & Grace finished an eight-year run in the mid-noughties but has recently been revived. It returns to Viaplay in late September.

14. Empire
