People in risk groups can now apply for coronavirus compensation in Sweden
From August 24th, people who are at high risk of serious illness from the coronavirus can claim for compensation if the pandemic meant they missed work.
The government decided on the compensation in late June, and as of Monday morning, it was possible to apply from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan).
The compensation is available to people who belong to risk groups and were unable to work from home during the pandemic, whether they're self-employed or an employee, due to the risk of infection. It also applies to people with temporary contracts who had to miss shifts for this reason.
Eligible risk groups include people who have ongoing or recently finished treatment for cancer, a BMI of over 40, transplant recipients with ongoing immunotherapy, and several other cardiovascular or respiratory diseases. People aged over 70 are also considered to be at especially high risk of illness from Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, but are not eligible for this compensation.
It applies retroactively for the period between July 1st and September 30th, and is capped at 804 kronor per day before tax for a maximum of 90 days. The agency has said payments will take an average of around 30 days to be processed.
To apply for the compensation, go to the Försäkringskassan website and log in to 'My Pages' or 'Mina Sidor'. From there, you can follow the instructions to apply for the money, and you will need to upload a doctor's certificate proving that you belong to one of the risk groups for the coronavirus according to the Swedish government.
