More patients in hospital as positive coronavirus tests increase
The number of Covid-19 patients needing hospital care is increasing in Sweden's five most populated regions.
The number of people testing positive for coronavirus is increasing in the Stockholm region. Last week, 20.3 percent of everyone who got tested had confirmed Covid-19, writes the DN daily. That figure was 16.3 percent and 8.4 percent in previous weeks.
Stockholm briefly halted home self-test kits last week due to long queues and a lack of capacity, but it later reintroduced them.
A total of 349 Covid-19 patients were receiving hospital treatment in Stockholm on Monday (including 34 in intensive care), which is a significant increase compared to Friday when the same number was 273 people. During the peak of the outbreak in spring, around 1,100 patients were in hospital at the same time.
More than 4,200 people have been confirmed to have Covid-19 in Stockholm since Friday, and the more people get infected, the more are likely to end up in hospital, said Stockholm's healthcare director Björn Eriksson.
"If you look at the Public Health Agency's scenarios, we can expect that we will get noticeably more people needing hospital care in the coming weeks," he told the TT news agency.
In Västra Götaland, 146 Covid-19 patients are in hospital, an increase of 50 in a week.
In Skåne, 111 Covid-19 patients are being treated in hospital. Skåne was one of the regions that were comparatively less hit by the outbreak in spring than many other big city regions, so this is the highest number since the start of the pandemic.
In Östergötland, 67 Covid-19 patients are in hospital, which is down from 80 last Tuesday.
And in Uppsala, the first region to introduce local recommendations, a total of 14.9 percent of tests for ongoing coronavirus infection came back positive, up from 13.6 percent the week before. On Monday 69 Covid-19 patients were in hospital.
