Storm Amy to hit Sweden over the weekend
A major storm, named Storm Amy by the UK meteorological office on Wednesday, is expected to sweep over Sweden on the weekend, bringing winds of up to 20 metres per second and extremely heavy rain.
The storm will hit Sweden's coast on Saturday, with southern and central Sweden most severely affected.
As of yet, Sweden's weather forecaster SMHI has not issued any warnings, but meteorologist Emma Härenstam told TT that warnings were "highly likely" to be issued to mountain areas, which are expected to see heavy snow.
The storm was formed from the remnants of Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda over the tropical Atlantic, which accelerated in the jet stream.

Swedish business strongly backs new EU rules to simplify work permits
The Confederation of Swedish Industry has welcomed plans to allow people with work permits to change employers and to double the time they have to find a job if laid off. But it warns that any benefits risk being eclipsed by government plans to further raise the minimum salary for a work permit.
"Simplifying the permitting process for foreign workers is a necessary measure to create a regulatory system that's fit for purpose," it concluded.
"But if the government at the same time creates a system with higher thresholds where it's the state that controls recruitment, fewer companies are going to either be able or dare to recruit foreign workers, and foreign workers are going to choose other countries to work in."
The new rules, which Sweden is required to bring in to comply with the EU's Single Permit Directive, include proposals that work permits should continue to be valid if a holder changes employer or job title and that work permit holders get six rather than three months to find a job if laid off.

Sweden's Migration Agency pledges 30-day processing time for PhD students
The Swedish Migration Agency has set a new 30-day target for concluding residence permit applications from foreign PhD students and their dependents, in what it hopes will mean better service for higher education.
Sweden's government has ordered the agency to shorten processing times and increase the proportion of decisions made within the statutory time frame (in other words, within 30 days), especially when it concerns residency permits for work, study and research.
The new model for handling permits for PhD students is based on a similar process to that the agency brought in for work permits back in 2024, which led to significantly reduced processing times.
"In order to increase the proportion of complete cases and thus shorten processing times, we are improving the service, starting early in the application process," Christine Davidsson, section manager at the agency, said in a press release.
"We are expecting good results which will mean not only that doctoral students get a response to their applications more quickly, but also that the application process becomes more predictable and transparent – you will know what you are expected to do and when you are expected to receive an answer to your application."
