From January 12th, the Migration Agency has adopted a new pledge to process visas for family members of Swedes abroad wishing to return home in 90 days or less.

As part of the pledge, the Migration Agency said that it has assigned all cases which fall into this category to a single unit.

"We are improving our services early in the application process to be able to increase the share of complete applications," Sandra Grönberg, the unit's head, wrote in a press statement.

The Migration Agency has already managed to significantly shorten waiting times for people in this group, cutting the average processing time from 204 days in 2024 to 84 in 2025 after the government tasked it with developing more efficient methods of processing cases.

"Thanks to our success in carrying out the government's assignment we are now in the enviable position of being able to make and keep this promise to family members of Swedes living abroad," said Ann-Kari Olsson, head of the Region Nord section, which was responsible for handling the assignment.

People wishing to move to Sweden as a family member of a Swedish citizen will, however, have to fulfil specific requirements. Accompanying family members are only eligible for this permit if they have been cohabiting for at least two years, or one year if they have a child together. They must also be living together in another country than Sweden at the time of application and have done so for at least twelve months.

Swedes living abroad retain the right to move back to Sweden at any time, whether they gained Swedish citizenship later in life or whether they were born with it. Their family members must, however, apply for a residence permit based on family ties if they do not also hold Swedish or EU citizenship.

Is there any indication that applications for renewals of residence permits to move to Sweden as a family member of a Swedish citizen are also being accelerated? Or is it just initial applications?
