A woman in Gothenburg who rented a four-room, 144 square meter apartment for 25,000 kronor per month from 2024 is set to get a significant proportion of that money back, local newspaper Göteborgs-Posten reports.
The negotiated rent from April 2025 was 13,726 kronor, resulting in the rental board in the city ruling in the woman's favour.
According to the rental board, in addition to receiving over 144,000 kronor back in over-payment, the tenant's ongoing rent will also be reduced by 10,000 kronor per month.
The company that rents out the apartment has agreed to part of the repayment, but claims that the unit has been renovated and that they are therefore entitled to a surcharge.
The rent committee has taken the tenant's side, but believes that the company has the right to make a surcharge for heating and electricity of 150 kronor per month.
