In a post on X made after 1am on Sunday, Tobias Andersson, one of the party's top up-and-coming politicians, laid the blame for the left-wing opposition's slender lead on the votes of foreigners who have become Swedish citizens over the past four years.
"The Moderates, the Christian Democrats, and the Liberals refused to halt the rollout of citizenships when we won the election," he wrote. "If we lose, it will be because we granted 200,000+ citizenships and they, in turn, voted left. Lose-lose, as they say."

The Sweden Democrats' were without doubt the election's biggest loser in terms of raw votes, with their share falling 3 percentage points on the 2022 result to 17.5 percent.
In November 2024 the far-right party's leader Jimmie Åkesson called for a freeze on new citizenship awards until the planned stricter requirements were put into place.
The government then ordered Sweden's Migration Agency to bring in new security requirements that led to the number of citizenships awarded to fall by more than half, leading to a sharp fall in new citizens in 2025 and the first six months of 2026.
Andersson, a former leader of the Sweden Democrats' youth wing who chaired the industry and trade committee during the last parliament, was not the only politician for the party to blame immigrant votes.
Mattias Karlsson, the Sweden Democrats' international secretary, pointed out on Facebook that the left-wing opposition had received 97.6 percent in Rosengård, an area of Malmö with a high immigrant population.
"North Korea numbers for the left in Rosengård," he wrote, along with an anti-Islamic tirade accusing left-wing politicians of financing mosques and even of wearing the hijab.
While it is unclear what Karlsson is referring to, a Social Democrat government spent 3 million kronor repairing damage to Malmö's main mosque back in 2006 after it was damaged in an arson attack.
