Stödkorv literally means "support sausage".
You know that feeling when you leave work at five in the afternoon, you still have to go home and make dinner, but you're already starting to feel a bit hungry?
That's when, in Sweden, you swing by Pressbyrån, 7-Eleven or a petrol station and grab a quick hot dog on the go. The Swedish word for a hot dog is a varm korv (warm sausage) and they're always ready on the grill in those shops.
And that, my friends, is a stödkorv. A sausage for that extra support your stomach needs to make it until dinner.
You might also hear Swedes talking about having a stödmacka (support sandwich) or stödvila (support rest, or in other words, a nap – also known in Swedish as a tupplur).
Stödkorv has been mentioned a lot in the media lately in connection with the Liberal Party.

They were looking like they weren't going to make it into parliament, so they needed other right-wing voters to vote tactically for them – to give them their stödröster (support votes).
Party leader Simona Mohamsson pulled a campaign stunt in the days before the election during which she served up stödkorvar to passers-by.
It appears to have worked. The Liberals easily sailed into parliament well above the four percent threshold.
